no you didn't say phones
but a vast majority have moved on from desktops.

as i have stated several times, Linux isn't for everybody.
its a choice if you wish to use it.

I've had college students try to do everything on their phone. It didn't turn out well for them.

I do absolutely everything on my mobile. Some things are a bit more convenient on a PC though, but OS doesn't really matter then. Could be Windows, Linux or MacOS.

There always will be outliers.

All the other engineers at my firm think I am crazy. I refuse to use Linux on my main PC. I do have a Linux machine that I have to use to write code for the devices we create that run a pared down Linux system in hardware. For that, I use Zorin. They are all die hard Linux nuts and a couple of them even refuse to use a Windows PC out of principle. It's as stupid as politics.

I can use either, but I prefer Windows for its seamless operation, for the most part. I find that there is too much configuration and screwing around with Linux to get stuff running and stay running. Then there are the inevitable updates that break a bunch of stuff, which results in more configuration and screwing around. I started logging my time and I found that I spent at least an hour a week fiddling and configuring and basically keeping Linux running.

"Oh hey. Linux had an update"
"Yeah, now stuff won't work anymore"
"Yeah, my compiler is shot again..."
"Oh, there was a compiler update too. Didn't you see it?"
"i guess I will fiddle with that first."
"Arrrrgh. It still won't work"
"Try this..."
"Woohoo! It works but it won't compile properly."
"Oh yeah, the new linker isn't compatible with the Linux update. You'll have to revert if you want to use it."
"&$^#!!!"

I've never had that happen on Linux. For me it simply just works. Even my own from source built "distribution" just works...

That's mostly the stuff I hear from my [non PC literate] wife when a Win update occurs.
Lost all her Edge tab history..
I then get asked what I did to her machine... SMH

Kinda cool, he is building his linux distrubution on his mobile, and then also run it on it mobile.

Interesting idea...I see no reason why not.

this was an interesting 6 page read. off to drink bleach now. any flaming or responses to me won't be replied to (or maybe will in a few days' time ).

That was my lament when I used Microchip's MPLAB-X for my work. They kept updating it and changing the compilers and linkers. Every couple of months I'd have to go looking for why my previously working code suddenly wouldn't compile!

Oh good God, yes. Don't get me started on those fools. I am running three versions behind on MPLAB-X just to maintain compatibility and so that I don't have to go and rewrite a bunch of code to get it to compile again.

I've never had that happen on Linux. For me it simply just works. Even my own from source built "distribution" just works...

Lucky you. I am constantly having to fiddle and fart around with my setup. It seems that every update breaks something, or I have to wait for a compiler/linker update when Linux updates, so I have to wait a few days (or weeks) for said compiler updates. I don't have the luxury of not updating as i need the security fixes and patches to be up to date and current for work.

Don't get me wrong, Windows has issues too, but I have yet to have to go back and recompile code after an update. For the most part, Windows just works right. Minimal drama.

I get it, sometimes those updates gets pushed out too fast. So fast that the rest of the world has no chance in the world to keep up with the pace. Same issue happens on Windows too. Some updates gets pushed out to all computers without proper testing, breaking everything. Have had that happen many times at work. Usually this happens when the software is something ancient, while the updates are bleeding edge stuff.

I agree that Windows works nicely most of the time. And yeah, it is not without issues either. One of the issues is the above mentioned ones among others. On home computers, usually it is drivers or some wrongly programmed software that brings Windows down on its knees. This is one reason why I try to keep my own instances as clean as possible, not modifying the system too much and completely avoid software that require Admin rights for no apparent reason. Some tools of course DO require elevated rights, but those are actual administration tools...so it makes sense. A game for instance should NOT require such permissions except for some anti cheat binaries. But I tend to avoid those too, just to keep my OS healthy. I don't even like those kinds of games anyways, so not a big loss.

They finally moved on from MPLAB-X to a new development environment Now I can run MPLAB-X and the latest release with the C compiler that works for all my stuff, and I suspect it's not going to change any time soon.
