What would you like to see in Windows 12?

Windows 11
Since there are some indications of a new version of Windows (Windows 12), let's discuss what you would like to see in Windows 12 (or whatever it will be called).

Since the new Windows would supposedly be built from scratch, here's what I would like to see happen:

Microsoft should consider taking elements of mobile operating systems (which are considered more secure) and implement them in their Desktop Operating System.

1. Total control over internet activity
Users should have granular control over how apps can connect over the network, as well as which parts of the computer apps have access to. A simple tabular design with an ALLOW/ DENY setting would make it extremely simple for the average user to control.

Screenshot 2022-02-22 at 13.28.32.png

2. Access to Files
Apps should be restricted to which files they have access to. There are multiple ways of implementing this:
  • Access to only the files that the app creates/ downloads.
  • One-time access to specific files that the user permits. This can be achieved by forcing the apps to use the built-in File Explorer to get one-time access to specific files. For example, if Facebook launches an app for Windows, and the user wants to upload a file, the app can use the built-in File Explorer to get one-time access to just the file that the user wants to upload.
  • Access to specific files or folders.
  • Full access to the disk.

3. Read-only OS Partition
The Operating System should be installed in a separate READ-ONLY partition, and all programs and their data should be installed in another partition. These partitions would be created and managed by the OS itself. This will significantly increase the security of the Operating System. This is the process used by macOS.

4. Time Machine
Having a simple method to backup and restore is extremely vital. It should be as simple as connecting the external device (or a device over the network), press the START button to create a backup and a RESTORE button to restore from a backup.

5. Total Uninstaller
The built-in program uninstaller leaves a lot to desire for. Microsoft is best poised to provide a built-in utility that can completely remove all traces of a program when it is uninstalled.

6. Screenshot/ Screen Recording Utility
Although present in very basic form, this is one very useful tool to have. A little bit of configurability would help in avoiding 3rd party tools.

The read only partition makes sense. The others do too, but I like #3.

Hi,
A real start menu not a miniature desktop replacement that win-11 has and is also the same win-8 had except full screen lol so yeah history repeats it's self unfortunately.

Might be nice if MS actually listened to insiders for a change and we would actually have a real start menu and not Show More nonsense on context menus by default lol

if they are working on window 12 that means to say that window 11 is rubbish:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: they got you again.
I have never had problems with any version of Windows, although I would admit that I am just the average user.

Windows 11 has a nice design, although there is no design that will make everyone happy. I would always prefer some amount of customisation, that would still keep the uniformity and consistency in design. Some of the customizations are too easy to implement, yet the creators don't provide the option to do so.

Just the Start menu design is all that bothers you?

I too would prefer a simple list view of apps when clicking on the Start menu, but there are many other things that are more important.

I am not going to worry about it yet until the Pluton chip business is sorted as many machines will not run 12 unless a, they are very new or b, there is a bypass fix.
It doesn't really matter what we would like to see in 12, I am sure MS will do their own thing :ROFLMAO:

Saw the context menu getting a brief mention (since the Start Menu was subject of focus), but these are still matters of design, and therefore, of less importance. Function should always take precedence over form.

I really hope we dont end up with a new OS from MS every year or two, Jeez 11 is around 6 months old? And were talking about another OS coming out already? 10 will run for another 4 years with support? Then 12? Ms having 3 OS's on the go at the same time is hilarious.

As per some reports, one can only expect it after a few years. They are starting from scratch, and it will take a minimum of 4 to 5 years to actually release it to the insiders.

In that case. I've never heard of an OS 5 years prior to release. That'd be like announcing some new cpus and gpus, available for purchase in 2027 😂 I didnt hear about win 11 in 2017.

I heard about Apple Car (hope they don't call it iCar) atleast 5 years back. Given how much time Apple takes to bring products to the market, I won't be surprised if it launches in 2030 or later. :D

Most important was Listen to insiders because none of the others would of been in 11 in the first place if ms had listened.

Hi,
Just first item
Most important was Listen to insiders because none of the others would of been in 11 in the first place if ms had listened.
Why don't you list those? Would be an interesting read.

Hi,

To be fair, I see that many of the decisions are based on the products being a continuous source of revenue for both the makers and independent developers.

One good example would be blocking ads. Google is an ad-based company, primarily. Apple is not. Yet Apple doesn't provide a built-in tool to block ads because it is a major or only source of revenue for independent developers, even if Apple takes a cut from those revenues. Same holds true for Microsoft.

All that said, there is still a large hole from the user perspective that is being exploited by corporations, with complete disregard for user privacy. The current state is far from being a balance that would keep both users and other stakeholders (developers, advertisers, the company itself and others) happy.

Most products today are increasingly becoming a perpetual source of revenue for the makers, either in the form of post sales support (by locking down the products so they can only be repaired/ serviced by authorised service centers) or in the form of upgrades (which can be forced through software updates aka planned obsolescence). This, of course, must stop.
