I'm back on Windows 10.
But I will upgrade to Win 11 once NordVPN has made their app compatible.
At first I hated Win 11. But after a while I found out it was pretty good and fast.
Just that NordVPN issue made me go back to Win 10. I never go online without my VPN.

Until they reverse all the dumbing down by removing useful options, I will never move to W11 as my main install. I will risk security issues rather than move to this POS.

Although I've expressed, in another thread, that I my initial impression was "unimpressed" with what looks like Win 10.2 the Insider version has worked well. I'll keep it.

I've been looking at Windows 11 for a while, but the more I see, the more I hate.
I am usually open to change, but not change for the sake of change, and not change that reduces functionality or usability.

I am tending to think that this version of Windows is going to be relegated into the Windows ME, Vista and 8 club.
Microsoft tend to release a bad operating system at times, then follow-up with a good one. It's like history repeating itself.

Anyhow, I have plenty of good system images to return to Windows 10.

In my brief exposure to windows 11 so far, about 2 days I've been running a multitude of tests for my use cases, IDE's and compiling, gaming, productivity and connectivity, multi screen tests, full screen/windowed tests, performance benchmarks, some feature tests and messing with the settings a lot.

I've yet to encounter a problem of any kind, which is pretty impressive, I tried old and new games alike.

I like windows 10, but I also see windows 11 as an improvement in some key areas for me.

my experience so far tells me this will probably overtake windows 10 in active users quite quickly.
features for gamers like auto HDR are impressive too.

it being so stable pre release is impressive given the woes of windows 10 pre-release I experienced.

I have one old machine that can't even run Windows 10 newer than 1809 !! but it does manage to run W11 as a VM so I'll keep W11 on that machine.

On another note W11 seems superficially almost indistinguishable from W10 so why they actually called it W11 I don't know --better in my view to have called it say W10 22H1/H2 or something -- especially as W10 will continue to have updates and possibly new features for a good few years yet. W11 does IMO seem to have better performance - so I'm not complaining -- it just seems apart from the watermark would a typical user who's been on W10 even spot the difference on another computer if it was running W11.

Cheers

I've been wondering about that since the announcement. All the features in windows 11 were slated for windows 10 so that got me thinking there was something else at play.

I had security and hardware as my 2 picks for the reason, the move to big little cpu's maybe had a play in that and other potential hardware changes to come with mcm gpu's as well maybe wouldn't do well on windows 10.

Security flaw they found which was too big to just patch but not known about.

Maybe even both of these meant to big a change at the kernal level.

Me, I am an optimal pessimist and believe it is driven by MS and their partners to sell new computers. I also firmly believe that Windows 10 had become such a spaghetti code mess that maintenance was becoming a costly nightmare. IMHO I base this on the quality of recent Windows 10 updates and feature upgrades. Also, supporting old hardware compounds maintenance issues and may be the basis for the restrictions on acceptable processors/systems. I am not saying any or all of this is bad in the long run - I am just guessing on the their motivation.

I can't imagine a security flaw for which it would be more productive and cost effective to introduce a whole new OS version rather than fix it in it current OS, qualified by my statement about the spaghetti code (though I am sure Windows 11 wasn't started from scratch). This might be part of the motivation.

I couldn't imagine a security flaw that severe either, I was just thinking about the timeline for end of life and thought...wow that's quite short.

I concur on the hardware side, and honestly I don't disagree with MS on that front, its unreasonable to think some hardware can be supported forever.
The choices are a bit strange but given the hardware in question will be 10+ years old when windows 10 support ends I don't think its unreasonable either.

As to windows 10, I've been getting more issues because of updates than I felt was reasonable. so I don't disagree there either.

I've not gone through all 5 pages of answers here but I'll be keeping it, even though I've not even seen it yet. :D

I can't put it on this HP laptop as there is not enough room and I'm not going to start messing around with a virtual space.

I'm going to be keeping this machine as 10 and buy a new laptop that can run 11, I'm still deciding on whether to buy one now that will be able to upgrade to 11 or wait until the official release date then buy one that already comes with it installed.

I don't think I imagined this but wasn't there some talk a few years ago that Microsoft was going to be completely rebuilding the foundation of Windows to bring out a new OS?

Joan, It's not that far away from the 5th October which is the official release date when the Windows 11 systems should be available, online if not yet in the shops.

Of course, If you can wait until after the holidays you will be likely to see some post christmas deals with good discounts over what you could expect to pay before

Correct.
I always keep numerous images on at least two internal backup drives.

It's not completely without issues. Drivers and applications that have been installed and updated while using Windows 11 have to be reinstalled. But it's much less work than a clean installation.

I will probably have Windows 11 on my laptop and Windows 10 on the desktop I use for teaching Windows 10.

Once all my students upgrade to Windows 11, I'll drop Windows 10.

My desktop PC is ready to upgrade to Windows 11 but I'll wait until there's an actual reason to do it. In all the reading I've done I haven't seen anything so compelling that I'd want to upgrade to have it. Having said that, how much more baggage can they add to an operating system?

I haven't seen so much baggage as the lack of things I already had and used in Windows 10!

I'm hoping they'll put it back by the time I need 11 for teaching.

The "Look! Shiny new toy!" part of my brain is fighting the "Why upgrade to meh?" part of my brain. Unless something is pure unadulterated fluff, I don't know why Microsoft removes features as part of an "upgrade".

Shiny new toys make very little difference to me. I want practicality.

Horses for Courses (different people are suited to different things)

As @Wynona said "practicality" is the name of the game and I think everyone would like that.

Like all the OS through time, I always find plenty with all the bells & whistles which I find a waste but yet some find adorable.

So far, this OS works for me with minimal tweats and refinements (less chance of me causing other conflicts) so while it performs as I need it to, its a keeper :)

Still looking, still reading. Not sure yet. Sometimes it takes awhile for me to take the plunge. Got the message a week or so ago that the update was ready. Almost did it then, then backed off. Windows 10 has always worked really well for me so I'm not sure I want to go through the change. Yet.
