Solved Why is a clean install so hard?

You are right about harder. A lot more people would upgrade to Windows 11 if they hadn't done that. The worst is One Drive. The other two can be easily dealt with. One Drive will force itself on you even if you didn't wanted it. To remove it is a pain and you risk losing your some of your data if you don't remove it correctly.
So I'm not imagining then. OneDrive forced itself even though I selected to locally install files assuming I had this option in Windows 11 Home?

I just managed to do a clean install of Win 11 Pro, 2H22, thanks to help from people in this thread Unable to run oobe or msoobe on clean Win 11 install :-)

But I hafta wonder. Why is Microsoft making a Win 11 clean install such a pain in the tuchus?:eek1: Win 10 clean install was very straightforward.

I'm asking because I was doing the initial setup and just cruising from step to step, when I ran into the issue of not being connected to a wireless network.
  • Why this requirement for Win 11, if not earlier versions???
  • And why oh why oh why is there no link or box that I could click on to address this issue?
  • What if I was just Joe SixPack, and I was excited to try out a clean install? What does Microsoft expect Joe supposed to do? Is Microsoft deliberately making this install so hard that Joe just gives up and installs Win 10? Or pay someone a day's wages to get the install done for him?
Hello to all the guys I know from TenForums. Glad to see you here.

Because Microsoft as a company has an old habit of trying to copy - whatever seems to be working under different platforms. Which, sometimes - can be an improvement - a change for good if you will (like switching Start Menu and the pinned icons to the middle - the Apple/OSX way - which indeed is more intuitive and also more practical - especially for Wide or Multiple Monitors). Tho, i can agree - that deeming a change as good or bad - is usually a subjective perspective. I mean, if your lifestyle is defined by conservatism - by upholding traditional values and the old way of doing this (even the old ways of using Windows) - all this changes or so called new features - are usually seen as a bad thing (and looking for ways to revert this changes - to the good old model - so to speak).

While other times - it's for the worst - like trying to mimic the Smartphone experience - which is tied to making/having an internet account. Thus, braking the oldest habit for Windows users - where the account option was always optional (you could always get a fully functional Windows - while setting a local/offline account) - up till Windows 11. You can still set a local account - yet, as mentioned above - Windows 11 is the first Windows version where this option is a bit of an hassle (over-complicating things since even basic features introduced in Windows 11 - revolve around having an internet account enabled).

Not to mention all the spying features introduced in the past years and up to this point - while yearning for their spying on its users piece of the cake (one of the main business models for Google, Facebook, basically - all the top tier internet giants). As can/could be seen with every recent releases of Windows - where they kept multiplying/increasing/expanding and enhancing the Windows spyware features.

Maybe force is the wrong word. It is more like if you don't pay close attention during setup you will end up with OneDrive. I just bought a new laptop a few months ago with Windows 11. I don't recall the questions I was asked when I first started using it. In any case I made sure I paid attention to what I was asked. Apparently, I did OK because OneDrive is not active on my computer. However, I still have to be vigilant because OneDrive is still in the context menus so I could end up saving something to the OneDrive folder if I am not careful.

I just realized that Windows 11 still hasn't given up on me. Windows 11 insists on keeping the OneDrive folder inside my user folder. If I double-click on the OneDrive folder this is what I see:

Please share your secret for the benefit of others.

Additionally, for some brain surgery or rocket science is a real piece of cake too and egoists erroneously assume others feel the same way 😏
It is no secret that you can use Windows 11 for free without activating it. It may seem unethical to some but Microsoft has done nothing to prevent it. BTW, I think I remember that Windows XP stopped working if you didn't activate it within 30 days. Microsoft has gradually backed off on that since then.

You can use Windows 11 indefinitely without activating it with a license, but you'll see "Activate Windows" watermarks and reminders and lose access to many personalization settings. Despite this, core functionality including updates and the ability to install your own apps and games won't be affected.

I uninstalled the OneDrive app to greatly reduce (not completely eliminate) such chicanery. I actually like the OneDrive folders in the cloud that I access with a browser, it's like having a USB stick in the cloud :-)

There is a tutorial on uninstalling/reinstalling OneDrive.

I simply use Geek Uninstaller to remove it. Making sure first that it's not syncing and the boxed unticked for it to start with Windows in settings in the sys tray (if still there). Rebooting and uninstalling it. Using 'everything' search there's still a huge amount of files still left over. It's never shown up again even with all the version upgrades in the Canary channel let alone CU and Feature updates in the RTM version.

Y'all keep saying that MS forces you to do this and that and the other thing.
It's pretty easy for me, to tell that you're paying no attention to the secrets that have been so openly printed out in these forums.
If you only play the game by MS's rules, then you get what you pay for.
I don't!
1. Download the Win-11 ISO from a trusted source (not necessarily from MS)
2. Use Rufus (the latest version) to burn the ISO to a Flash Drive, selecting all the options Rufus gives you to eliminate the MS BS.
3. Boot up your PC with the Rufus conditioned Flash Drive and perform the install. Then Tweak to your hearts content.

One Drive is easily UN-Installed, along with a lot of other things.
Other things can simply be 'Disabled' in the task manager.

The key to the easy install, is using Rufus to burn the ISO to the Flash Drive.
It gives you the options to remove all the compatibility stipulations, security questions, etc. It even allows you to pick a Name to be installed into Win-11.

I realize that it's impossible, but I do wish I could sit down with Y'alls and walk you through a Win-11/Pro/64 install, the way I do it. No charge. Maybe lunch!

You need to go back and reread what I was responding to which was someone commenting about Post #16. In that post they said they didn't need a Key to install Windows 11. That might give some people the impression that the EULA was being violated. Do I need to explain further?

Hi,
11 auto activates if win-10 was, no matter if it was upgraded or clean installed.
Really helps if IP is the same on either method and of course HW ID matches

I just realized that Windows 11 still hasn't given up on me. Windows 11 insists on keeping the OneDrive folder inside my user folder. If I double-click on the OneDrive folder this is what I see:
That's what I'm talking about. Despite the precautions taken, OD still insists on keeping itself in the userfolder. I had to go through lengthy "fix"to get it out of there despite already uninstalling it with a third party uninstaller. I want to avoid this in the future, and I will. Because I'll just wipe my laptop and revert to W10. Let's see what happens with W12 next year. I'll be watching.

Perhaps you SHOULD sit down with us all. I used Rufus and there was no difference using it and the official Windows USB created ISO in regards to what you claim you can do like remove all the compatibility stipulations, security questions, etc. Otherwise, feel free to create a YouTube video doing the same. It should be super simple for you given your skill and knowledge.

The OneDrive issue happens with W10 too, and W12 won't come next year, LOL

There is a tutorial on how to properly uninstall OneDrive. One of the most important things to do before doing the actual step of uninstalling the OneDrive app is to stop the OneDrive sync, if you omit this step, you will create a mess. Follow all the steps in the tutorial in the right order very carefully, it does work.

Thereafter, if you want to delete the OneDrive folders, make a copy of your user data first and put them in the folders you want, like in the traditional library folders: documents, pictures, etc.

Good luck (y)

Ha. I’ll have to take your word for it that the OD issue also happens with W10, my Swiss cheese memory can't say for certain since I reinstalled both OS versions countless of times.

Here is just one link of many which suggests W12 will be available sometime next year; Windows 12: Everything we know and what we want to see

@Sammy888 OK, the OneDrive issue will likely happen with W12 too, although there is no tutorial yet for uninstalling OneDrive for W12, only for W11, W10, and possibly earlier versions of Windows.

OneDrive was launched in 2007 (as SkyDrive, later rebranded for trademark reasons to OneDrive) and it was at first not troublesome, but it became more and more troublesome over the years, so you are in good company of many, many people with OneDrive issues.

Anyway, the tutorials IS a way to get out of the OneDrive issues, good luck (y)(y)

Thanks. It's good to know we're not alone. I wish there was a specific tutorial to remove OneDrive in W10/W11 and restore our folders like Desktop, My Documents, et al to a normal state in the form of a "prioritized" sticky instead of searching for it here. It's obvious OneDrive is a major problem for many. @Brink. Currently, there are several tutorials and seem to overlap to some extent. Moreover, I find it confusing to know which one to choose. Hence, a sticky.

Sorry Brink. I have to say it's overwhelming to have to go through three different threads. Can they be merged into one please? Also do the same for Windows 10?

Sorry mate, but separate tutorials for separate settings. It would just be too much in one otherwise. :(

I'd recommend to turn off and copy back first, then uninstall.

Hi,
Use the one tutorial to turn off sync

Then open cmd as administrator and paste this string and onedrive is disabled
Code:
rem Disable One Drive
reg add HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive /v DisableFileSyncNGSC /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
start /wait %SystemRoot%\System32\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall
rd "%PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft OneDrive" /Q /S
reg delete "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" /v OneDriveSetup /f
reg delete "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" /v OneDriveSetup /f
reg load HKLM\DEFAULT c:\users\default\ntuser.dat
reg delete HKLM\DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v OneDriveSetup /f
reg unload HKLM\DEFAULT
