Why Windows 11?

That's you.. many have more complex rigs that have more hardware. It makes no sense to have a cloud based OS.

The advantage of the main-frame for when I was working was that every facility in the USA did the same thing, send and receive messages, weather reports, flight plans, etc. The problem for individual users is they don't do the same things just as buying 2 computers off the shelf at the same time doesn't keep them identical after being put into use.

Sure, you can still have as much hardware and software as you like. The cloud OS would be another resource. For some the cloud OS would be the main resource, others would not use the cloud OS. To each his own.

I don't think there is a right or wrong, here. It is a bit like some people buy a small house for big $, others rent a big house for small monthly $, to each his own.

A cloud based OS will require that everyone has a high speed internet connection. Anything short of that would be problematic.

I think that's because the mainframes at the time couldn't even do what a kid's phone can do these days.

Depends on what you do. Technology solutions will also be found, video streaming for example will be further developed. Not so long ago, so called video telephony was a lab curiosity.

There are still many in the US and other nations that don't have access to high speed internet. Business aren't the issue. Given that storage capacity isn't an issue I don't see the need for a cloud based OS.

Time will tell. YMMV

Mainframes were just designed to do massive amount of work at the same time for business. At least during my time of using them up till 2010 we just used them for processing massive amounts of data and left the rest for PC's.

Resource sharing (in the cloud and elsewhere) tends to be economical, otherwise businesses wouldn't do it. I do see benefits of resource sharing for professionals and families, too. Of course, the technology has to be developed and time has come (y)

Sure, that's one way to divvy up the tasks. There are other ways to divvy up the tasks. The cloud can provide as many or as little services as your big or small $ will buy. That's already happening now.

I know of a lot of areas around me that doesn't have cable or any source of high speed internet. I'm sure that there are advantages for some to use a cloud based OS. For me, I'll stay with the OS being installed on my computer. I might lose my internet connection but I'll still be able to use my computer.

Yeah, I am looking forward for having a capable cloud OS at my disposal. I would buy a Chromebook, if Chrome OS was not so extremely limited. But a capable cloud OS that can genuinely run Office (and not just web-based Office) a bit more elaborate Graphics than what Office can do, a bit more sophisticated web capabilities, etc. would be good for me personally, without having to worry about backup and malware, in particular, but also automatic updates, etc. that I don't even want to see. I am frankly tired of upgrading OS numbers and Office version years. I am sooo happy that I don't have to do the latter since long with the Office subscription, I won't have to do the former with the subscription to the capable cloud OS :cool: And if my Internet is down, I still have my local OS, it's like having 2 computers, one on my desk, and one in the cloud, and they are automatically synced :cool: :cool: Even if my laptop gets stolen, I simply buy a cheap one and sync :cool::cool::cool:

Others can obviously use the capable cloud OS in their own ways (or not use it, for that matter).

IMO Truthfully, I don't think you're missing much from windows 10 for windows 11. To me this 11 version is 10 with a bunch of different interfaces locations for all the same features, it's windows 10 with a facelift... It's like W98, you had 98 and then 98 second edition

I doubt very much that Microsoft will give Windows 365 (the computer in the cloud) away for free.
The consumer version of Windows 365 is still a few years away, though.

You still need an ordinary Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer to access your Windows 365 computer in the cloud.
At least that's the case for the business version of Windows 365 that will be released in a few hours.

I'm not OK with cloud anything. Internet connections go down sometimes. MS may do it with Windows eventually, but that will be mainly to increase their income. Loudly ballyhooed benefits to consumers will mostly be nothing but smoke and mirrors.

Why not the same for W11 --Because it's there!!!

As for running a desktop OS entirely from the cloud might be viable and work for businesses / offices etc I'm not so sure this would be particularly advantageous to home / consumer users - and certainly problematical for people who take PC's out into the field for scientific surveys etc -- e,g Volcano research and the like where Internet might not be readily available and twhere he cost of providing an access point via a Satellite phone as an alternative doesn't come cheap.
