Please clarify something for me. When you say 'no wifi present' do you mean that no wireless adapter is detected in control panel>device manager>network adapters>
OR do you mean that the icon is still in the bottom right system tray but that there is no list of available networks being detected?
Also, it would be helpful if you could furnish us the exact model of his Asus Tuf.
While looking in device manager, make sure there are no devices with an exclamation mark on them.

Check settings>network and internet>make sure wifi is on and airplane mode is off. Under advanced network settings>more settings>network reset>reset now. Then restart.

You say it is a new laptop. Has wifi ever worked?

hi @glasskuter

yes the computer has been on the internet prior to this with no issues, have been through all the process's you posted and there is no WIFI in network adapters and no WIFI icon from taskbar options, where bluetooth and airplane mode is situated. have been through everything and just no sign of WIFI period.

he can still connect to internet with phone and another windows 10 machine no problems.

i have researched this and apparently this is common after last WU but ol mate is 100km's away and cant physically go through the machine in front of me but after explaining and guiding him through the process you posted it just doesnt show anywhere or any option to enable WIFI.

i have him getting a ethernet cable and try to download drivers again for it but that wont happen for a couple of days so reaching out for ideas

thanks for your reply (y)
Rob

Rob, Try the suggestions in this article. It's for Windows 10 but should still apply. FIX: Wi-Fi stopped working after Windows 10 update

If none of that helps, can you walk him through uninstalling the windows update that caused the problem to see if wifi comes back?
1. settings>windows update>Pause updates (select 5 weeks from the dropdown list. This is so the same update won't automatically reinstall)
2. update history>scroll to bottom and select uninstall updates>Right click on problematic update>uninstall. Restart.

If uninstalling the update fixes the issue, have him report the bad update on feedback hub. Hopefully MS will fix it before the pause time lapses. Also please report back here with the KB number of the update
Good luck.

Please check a few more things before going so far as to roll back the version of windows.

Let's go from simplest option to the most difficult.

First, you did not indicate that any bangs (exclamation marks) are being seen in Device Manager. So, that at least indicates that the system is not seeing a failure on the WiFi adapter.

With that in mind, check these items:

1) Is there a hotkey on his system to disable WiFi? Some system have an "airplane mode" button that disables all radios (WiFi, BlueTooth, etc.) while some may have a button to disable just WiFi. If this exists, toggle it to make sure the issue is not simply that it is disabled.

2) Check the BIOS - the BIOS on some systems will allow you to disable WiFi. Make sure it is actually turned on there.

3) After checking 1 and 2, try this:

Open Device Manager and select View > Show hidden devices. Expand the Network adapters section. Do you now see the WiFi adapter? If so, is it greyed out? If greyed out, first make sure that you know the model of the WiFi adapter. If it shows the model here in Device Manager, note the name and make sure you have a driver for that model WiFi adapter handy. Then, try right-clicking on it, select Uninstall device > Attempt to remove the driver for this device > Uninstall.

When done, try to reinstall the driver for the device again.

Hope this helps!

thanks for the suggestions, havent been able to go to indepth with ol mate yet but will certainly cover all these bases before taking any drastic action for sure.

he's not to computer literate so i have to talk him through all these steps via phone so will be a trial but i have faith, i'm not even thinking about rolling back just yet and will try and source a solution before we even consider that.

from what i've researched an update, i think it was May, has caused this problem so with a bit of luck a driver download/update might be enough but we'll see.

thanks for your feedback every little bit helps.

Rob, just let us know if we can help any further.

I completely understand the difficulties with remote troubleshooting. I did tech support for about 25 years so I get it 100% :-)

Check, if "Radio Management Service" is running, sometimes CU disable it and then PC can not see WiFi networks.

I had a problem where the wifi driver was not signed, and pc did not even show the wifi adaptor. I was able to boot pc into advanced restore mode to boot with unsigned driver, but it needed that every boot.

In the end, I had to download a signed driver, and install it via device manager.

ok i have an update

ol mate turned his computer on this morning ready to go through everything suggested here and low and behold he fired it up and everything was back to normal.

his WIFI icon was back in his taskbar and notifications area, it connected to the internet automatically as normal and all is good in his world.

go figure we tried all this a few days ago, shutdown reboot both modem and machine many times with no success.

thanks to all for the help effort and time.
