Win 11 - Likes and Dislikes (so far)

Do you have a USB installer for both Win 10 & 11?

I have an 10 installer in my multi-boot Ventoy USB. If W11 is now available, I will add that in my USB.

I'm actually surprised, because my new build has TPM 1.2 and 2.0 support.

you literally ruined W11 with classic shell
I couldn't get Classic Shell to work. Open Shell only works if I assign the Win key to open it. I can't get open by mouse hover to work but that might be down to using Hyper V.

I hate when my PC that I daily-driving can't run Windows 11 because of TPM 2.0 requirement. It is impossible to find an custom PC or old PC (that can run Windows 10) that has TPM module into it.
My 2012 Gigabyte motherboard has a v1.0 20 pin TPM slot. Of course the Gigabyte TPM is no linger available. I've now bought a Foxconn TPM module form eBay to try for £3. No great loss if it doesn't work.

Hi there - the no local account is easily installed for W11 versions other than HOME by simply disabling Internet until ist boot after everything set up. then re-enable Internet.

Dislikes :

1) Start menu but easily fixable via the Tutorials

2) default position of Windows keyboard key on the taskbar -- can be shifted to left also via settings etc

3) probably more aggro -- openssh-server doesn't install - fail via optional features -- OK that's always a possibility given this is a leaked "unofficial" build - but what is irritating is that Windows keeps every so often trying to re-install it - there doesn't seem any way to turn it off without disabling all updates.

4) Although probably not a W11 problem itself - Office 2019 on install gives the "License Nag screen" even when the same update level on W10 is perfect. Get around - method posted on W10 Forums.

5) Activation a bit of a muddle : - used my old Technet VL W7 Ultimate key -- after failing -- my fault as I had the wrong keyboard layout so key originally entered twice

6) Only available (at install time) for US English although keyboards and regional options available

7) display language etc is a bit of a hodgepot - again forgive this at the moment because this is still an "Unofficial leaked build"

8) on a real machine the iso doesn't give option of which version of Windows to install unless you do that old trick. On a VM you get all the choices. The iso I'm using has them all in there (W11 home, pro, Pro N, education, Workstations, enterprise etc)

Likes:

1) Installs super fast on a KVM/QEMU VM -- 7 mins from mounting the ISO , installing from scratch to up and running with Local user account and several apps installed. Approx 40GB virtual disk size used -- getting a bit short of space though after Photoshop, Office etc installed so I'll probably add another 20GB.

2) New icons seem OK to me - not too bothered but if a GUI wants to make itself look a bit snazzier why not

3)Networking works (finally for Windows !!!) straight out of the box with connectivity to Linux NAS, W7, W10 and XP machines - some of them VM's

4) on my system at least runs super fast and I'm nether using Graphics passthru or "Real Raw Disk" so using the paravirtualised Disk vio driver (qcow2 format), QXL vio video driver and virtual NICs (vio again) so I could speed this thing up a zillion times by optimising hardware with passthru to equate to almost bare metal.

5) stable enough - I haven't been able to break it yet -- !!!!

Note - assuming you have the correct iso you can get a choice of which version to install (Home, Pro, education etc) by the following trick :

Create a “ei.cfg” file containing the following text:
[EditionID]
Professional
[Channel]
Retail

save in the /sources file in your extracted iso , recreate the iso and install.

Cheers

Search is not working for me - just a blank

Edit: No worries - did a reinstall and working now - may have been firewall setting

My loss of Search was a Windows Firewall cause (just tested - re-install was unnecessary) - telemetry has no bounds :(

When I installed Windows 11 Pro I was able to just skip the option of using a MS Account. All I used was a user name. I'm still running it as a local account. I did have to sign in when I installed the Home version. I also found out that if you use a MS Account when installing that Windows still uses the first 5 characters of you email address as your user name. One would think by now MS would give you the option to choose a user name.

One thing I also like to see in the installation process as part of personalization is the ability to name the computer and to name the "disk" (i.e. C:\Wind11_Test) which can be skipped if not preferred. I know all this can be done after the installation but if would be nice to do it from the start.

Yeah, as long as your system supports it, it is not gonna be an issue. Otherwise, it is a PITA for some of us. So, it is a dislike for others. :)

I don't much like the looks of what I'm seeing. But since I always do what I can to customize each new edition of Windows to look classic, that ugly swirled blue ribbon shouldn't be visible for long once 11 is released. It's what's under the hood that really matters more than the superficial elements this build seems to be focused on.

It's just the way it is... Merc and BMW do the same - what get's modified under the hood is not easy to explain - people just see the outer shell (and complain when their Merc stalls for no reason ...LOL)

Yeah, as long as your system supports it, it is not gonna be an issue. Otherwise, it is a PITA for some of us. So, it is a dislike for others. :)
I can't believe Microsoft will insist on TPM in the final release version. They would catch too much grief for it. In my own situation, the machine I'm running Insider Beta Channel on will support only TPM 1.2. Accommodating 2.0 would mean buying a new motherboard, CPU and memory as well as a new Windows key since the current Windows 10 Pro on it is OEM.

I think the TPM 2 is only used for MS purposes and yes.. it's not going to be applicable for consumer use. They did it for the dev version

One thing I dislike for sure, is the new boot logo. I know that it's beta version and all that, but the logo..... It's just ugly. Even the Windows 10 boot logo is much better than that. Also I wish it was a bit more customizable beyond logo, like, in Windows Vista at least you could change the progress bar into Aurora UI (there is also Aurora UI when resuming Vista, did you know?). Windows 7 boot animation can be changed at least.

Speaking of Windows Vista; The widget app. I know it's called widget; that it requires you to sign in to MSN account and that it only has news, weather and such for now. But the way it's designed reminds me of the Windows Vista sidebar. It's almost like they brought back the gadget after being discontinued due to security issues. I really like it. If it has more customization in later builds, such as being able to drag the news panel into the desktop then it will truly feel like that period.

I know they will never do it, but I want something similar to that orb back in Windows 11. The one where black screen, cursor turns into rolling before disappearing, the orb shines up and you're taken (with flashy dim) to the Welcome screen. It felt like a genuine 'hi'.

Still have to see the Windows 11 build on the live stream to see more about it. But it looks somewhat promising. Albeit, with gripes.

I think nothing can be done with the boot logo in terms of design because it is still in the pre-OS environment. There's only so much you can do graphically in Pre-OS mode. They can probably change the design and color, but it can only be flat and boring at that stage.

Yeah, fair enough. It is after all still in beta. I just said that. It might change though.

I think it was from Enderman/Andrew on Youtube, I don't know, but I know he (or someone else) said that Windows 11 might be the first OS to only support UEFI mode.
