Win 11 - Likes and Dislikes (so far)

Yeah, fair enough. It is after all still in beta. I just said that. It might change though.

I think it was from Enderman/Andrew on Youtube, I don't know, but I know he (or someone else) said that Windows 11 might be the first OS to only support UEFI mode.

Yeah. He said that in an video.
But, this is what I like:

Dislikes:
  • Unable to drag a file into an app in the taskbar.
ex: dragging a video file into a media player that is minimized in the taskbar. the app doesnt show/pop-up.
  • Unable to change taskbar position
  • Right-clicking the taskbar only gives taskbar settings.
  • Start menu is sh*t.
  • Extracting archives needs extra step (hustle)
ex: before, if you right-click an archive (rar) you have the option in the menu to extract here/to.
now, you have to hover on the winrar menu to open a submenu and have the other extract options.
  • Unable to remove the shadows around the borders/windows and fonts/names on desktop files.
  • No more sneak-peak on the desktop button.

I agree for the most part... but why do you think the Start is sh*t?

Use 7-zip for archiving instead.

I think the lack of Taskbar stuff will be added in the next release.

It's sh*t coz it lacks user control/customization (for now) and that's what irks me, specially that "Recommended" section where all your recent files shows up. it's quite annoying! 😒 They should make a separate tab/section for that. Make it more organized. I know its new and pretty sure there will be more changes as more people start using and complaining about something! 😂. but overall it is sleek. I actually find it "sexy-elegant". 😘 Samsung have their "Sam", I think Windows 11 should have a "Cortana" promoting it. 😁 😎

I'm using both Winrar and 7-zip. its fine tho. it's just a minor personal inconvenience for me.

Hope so, coz its more convenient and "fluid" than right-clicking over the start button or looking for a particular setting somewhere else.

Speaking of, it looks like Windows 11 has the Cortana function system, I saw it on some videos. But I'm a little worried because her functionality is getting reduced. Yesterday I was having trouble changing Cortana language, I was trying to find the settings for it WITHIN Cortana itself. I don't use it, the only reason I was doing it was for the easter egg stuff.

I later found out that with the version 2004 (Or whichever version was that, I'm not sure, but I know it was awhile ago) the functionality of said app had been changed. So if you want to change Cortana language you gotta change Windows language too. It was separate before. I don't like it.

Overall I like it and the direction it's heading. But,, it's far too early to judge it, IMO. It's a dev copy and really not meant for the general public to use. If it does come out for general use in Oct of this year I suspect many of the current issue will have been addressed.

First, I noticed several people reference the fact that they could not create a local account. Actually, I found it super simple to create a local account during setup like this:

Image1.jpg
Image2.jpg

Note: I was installing in 10 Pro, don't know if this would be any different for Home edition.

Other than that, I do like the start screen with the exception that it's limited to something like 18 items before you have to scroll to the next screen. I hope that they make that screen resizable so that I can fit a lot more onto it at once.

I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the screen snap options when hovering over the maximize button on a window.

There are still things on my wish list that I wish Microsoft would finally incorporate, but it looks like they may never happen.

I have one more like to add to the list...

I have a multimode laptop that can be used in traditional laptop mode or the screen can be flipped 360 degrees to make it a tablet. Gone is the Windows 10 way of handling this where it wants to switch between desktop and tablet mode. It is now all one single cohesive mode with no mode changing.

I admit that I don't use tablet mode much, but this does make it a bit more attractive to me.

I'll start.

I am not a big fan of the new icon based "Start" menu. It is just like opening a "folder".
I still like and miss the multi-functional classic start menu.

View attachment 261

And just to satisfy my "Like", I installed the Classic Shell app and it still looks so good and offers more options. It is like a one-stop-shop place for me. I wish there is a built-in options for start menu.

EDIT:

Ok, my first dislike is officially resolved. Thanks @Brink for the tut.
I can live with the Win 10 start menu... :D

I'm thankful you tried ClassicStart/Shell and showed that it works. I'm more of a fan of Win7's Start menu than 8's/10's. I may stick with 11's Start for a while once I get 11. But it's nice to know I can fall back to 7 or earlier if I want to. Thanks again!

I don't much like the looks of what I'm seeing. But since I always do what I can to customize each new edition of Windows to look classic, that ugly swirled blue ribbon shouldn't be visible for long once 11 is released. It's what's under the hood that really matters more than the superficial elements this build seems to be focused on.
Now I remember....it reminds me of MS's Silverlight logo.

I'm thankful you tried ClassicStart/Shell and showed that it works. I'm more of a fan of Win7's Start menu than 8's/10's. I may stick with 11's Start for a while once I get 11. But it's nice to know I can fall back to 7 or earlier if I want to. Thanks again!
just be aware that Classic Shell is now an abandonware and no support anymore but it is still available for download.

I don't like the unnecessary animation.
Like when you click the settings button, it shows the gear icon for some time before the settings panel swipes in. And when you choose an option inside the Settings panel, same things, it freezes for a moment and then swipes in.
Animation makes the system feel slower and not snappy. I am sure there's a way to turn off animation. I just need to find out again.

I think the transform is stuttery because there is still a lot of debug code running in the background - feels very dev in that respect.

I hope so. The button click reaction is not so fluid right now.

Are you able to open Windows & Security tab? Mine doesn't do anything after clicking on it.
