win 11 not seeing cd for burning

having trouble with burning mp3 cds. when i put in a cd laptop will recognize band play. yet when i go to burn laptop will not see cd in player. have tried two different burning software's i.e. roxio burn, express burn. even after doing all requested troubleshooting steps, still no resolution. have even tried different cd media. went on both programs site for resolution. no help there. even going to win 11 site dredged up same "it's someone else's trouble". does anyone have a meaning full fix.

What is the Media, CD-RW or CD-R ? Is it new stock or old ?

As viewed in File Manager does the Icon change when CD-R or CD-RW is inserted ? to what ?

Right click if it does > Properties > Depending on the disk it should indicate free space.

Go to some sample files select Right click on them > Show more options > Send to > listed drive.

That should get you to The built in CD burning of Windows 11, choose second option (NOT the 1st) > Next > 3 dots > Burn.

If you have a DVD-RW drive and can detect DVDs but not CDs, or the other way around, then one of the two laser heads is either dirty or faulty. In your case the CD head cannot focus on the surface of the CD-R (green) and properly detect it. If it can focus on a commercial audio CD (silver) but not on a writable CD-R (green), most likely you have to clean the laser head. There are cleaning CDs for that purpose, or you can use a soft cotton cloth and rub it gently on the lens (assuming you have access to it or you remove the cover to do so). In worst case maybe you can replace the unit, they are not that expensive, assuming you can still find one to buy.

PS: This implies that you are using a well known brand, not some unknown old blanks that are probably damaged. The unknown blanks had issues being detected when they were fresh, not now after so many years. Try a TDK or Verbatim or other respectful brand before you replace your drive.

If it is a hardware issue (drive cannot read disc properly), no software can fix it. He has to either clean the lens or replace the drive. Replacing a faulty lens is not that easy and not worth the cost and effort. It is easier and cheaper to replace the whole drive if cleaning the lens doesn't work. Use a cleaning CD or, if you have access to the lens, a soft cotton cloth.

PS: If the drive cannot read a specific brand of blank CD-R discs, try another brand. Prefer well known brands to improve compatibility. Also old forgotten discs might have become bad. Try a new disc.

Can you please answer the basic questions asked in post #3.

Windows Media Player legacy can be found in:
Control Panel > Windows Tools.
or
Start > All > Windows Tools.

If it's not there then:
Settings > System > Optional features > More Windows features > Media Features > Windows Media Player Legacy (App) > tick box > OK > ? Restart.

You get the same Icon changes in there unsurprisingly as it uses the same Win 11 burning engine.

The OP said he is trying to burn MP3 files on a CD-R. This is technically a data disc and he can copy-paste the files from File Explorer and then start burning it. Media Player legacy is used when you want the MP3 files converted to a standard audio CD. A standard audio CD can hold up to 80 minutes, about 25+ songs with average duration of 3 minutes. A data disc can hold up to 700MB, that is over 230 songs with average 3MB size (128K "CD quality" bitrate). So without third-party applications, use File Explorer to create a data disc and Media Player legacy to create a standard audio CD.

Do you mean copying from one CD drive and burning to another CD drive or copying the files to the laptop? If your trying to copy from one CD drive and burn to another CD drive you may have to save the data to the laptop or an external HDD first. Another possibility is that if they're factory CDs they may be copy protected.

From the first post, what I understand is, it plays a prerecorded (aka original audio CD) fine, but fails to detect a blank CD-R. This can happen if the CD-R is bad and difficult to detect (focus on). Try cleaning the lens. Also is happens for specific low cost virtually unknown brands, but not for more expensive well known brands, such as Verbatim. In that case, don't bother with unknown brands, try a better brand. Also try a new (fresh) package, as your old ones might have gone bad over time. This happened to me many times with cheap unknown brands back in the day. Even worse, it works, you burn something only to discover it cannot be read a few days later! Nightmare! If you try to clean the lens, then try a couple of well known brands unsuccessfully, then most likely the drive is faulty and you have to replace it. This also happens with old drives, there is nothing worth doing to fix it, just buy a new one.

I looked up Verbatim CD-R disk and I was surprised that they are still known to be of good quality. Something that is very hard to find in the recordable DVD market. I totally agree with you when with you said, "This also happens with old drives, there is nothing worth doing to fix it, just buy a new one." Once the laser starts getting weak there is nothing one can do with it except buy a new drive.
