Win11 goes into unwakeable sleep after the last update

Win11
For years, I have started my PC at the beginning of my week, used Win-L to lock it when I went away (meeting, lunchtime, evening, etc) and then touched either the mouse or keyboard to wake it up when I returned.

When I had Win10 on the PC, it never really went to sleep, and the fans were running the whole time. One of the things that pleased me when I installed Win11 (clean install, not an upgrade) was that about 20 minutes after locking it, it would go to sleep, the fans wouldn't run, and it would sit there until I tickled the mouse or keyboard.

Some time last week, this stopped happening. Now when I leave the PC, no amount of moving the mouse or pressing keys wakes it up. As it happens, I have two mice, one wireless and one wired. Neither of them would wake up the PC. The only thing I can do is pull the power and restart. Needless to say, this is less than ideal.

I checked the Device Manager, and both the keyboard and the two mice have the "Allow this device to wake the computer" checkbox checked.

Following some advice I found after a bit of searching, I tried editing the power plan, and turned off hybrid sleep, but that didn't help. I then tried setting it so that it never went to sleep, but hibernated after 15 minutes. The first time I left it after this, I had to hold the power key down until the PC appeared to reboot, but when Windows resumed, it had all my windows open, just as I had left it. It was a bit painful having to wait for it to come back, but at least I didn't lose my open windows.

I started the PC today, and left it locked. However, when I came back and held the power key down (tickling the mice and keyboard didn't do anything), it rebooted Windows completely, losing everything I had open.

I don't know for definite that this is related to last Tuesday's Windows updates, but it went to sleep and woke up with the mouse fine before that, and has not being doing so since, so it does seem likely.

I wondered about uninstalling some updates, but there are a few there, and I have no idea which may be the cause.

Apart from the waste of time, and the loss of continuity (ie trying to remember what I was doing when I left it), File Explorer doesn't remember what tabs I had open, so I have to play around getting those back, and Edge complains that it shut down unexpectedly, and sometimes offers to restore my tabs. This is all making it very hard to work.

Anyone able to advise? Thanks

HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN TRY:

If you haven't already, make sure you have the latest drivers(especially chipset) and latest bios version. (Per Asus site latest bios is F37 12/26/22)

Verify you have no file system corruption.
Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer
(Note-you can follow up with another sfc /scannow command to make sure that dism repaired the files)

See if issue occurs in clean boot
Perform a clean boot to eliminate software conflict causing the issue. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

If SFC comes back with the message that it couldn't repair some, then it's likely a faulty drive, in my experience.
My PNY CS900 SATA SSD was failing like that! It wasn't old, so it was clearly defective! (not on my daily driver)

A possibility and never a bad thing to check a drive for errors, but a corrupt file can be corrected with dism in most cases. He did not indicate that his system is exhibiting any other problems. If there is corruption that can't be repaired, a repair install should do the trick.

@MrYossu Do a web search and for "unable to wake from sleep aorus x570" You are not alone. I don't think it has anything to do with the latest windows update. The reports go all the way back to 2020.

That SSD, also caused Windows to randomly start loading super-slowly! It starting feeling like an old 5K RPM HDD!

On one of the reboots, I noticed that Windows 10 was loading unbelievably slowly! I think I saw its SMART show something wrong, too.

Try
Maybe I've missed something, but that link seems to be for people having problems getting their PC to go into sleep. I ahve the opposite problem, in that I can't get it out of sleep.

HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN TRY:

If you haven't already, make sure you have the latest drivers(especially chipset) and latest bios version. (Per Asus site latest bios is F37 12/26/22)
So here I'm confused. According to System Information, I have version F37c 12/05/2022, which doesn't appear at all in the page you linked. I downloaded version F37, which although the name implies it's earlier than F37c, the date is later. However, when I tried to run the updater (Efiflash.exe) I got a message saying that I needed a 64-bit version. However, the download page doesn't seem to make any distinction, so I'm not sure how to upgrade, or if I should even try.

Verify you have no file system corruption.
Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair.
It said that 4 files were corrupt and fixed, but didn't say what. I looked in the log, but it was thousands of lines, and I couldn't work out what was fixed anyway. However, as it said it was fixed, I didn't think I needed to worry too much.

See if issue occurs in clean boot
Did a clean boot, manually put the PC to sleep (clicked the desktop, pressed Alt-f4 and chose sleep), waiting until it had gone to sleep, tickled the mouse and it woke up fine.

I then tried re-enabling the services and it woke up fine. Finally I re-enabled the startup apps, and again it woke up fine.

However, sometime during the later rounds of putting it to sleep and waking it up, I noticed that after it went to sleep, and the fans stopped whirring, and the pretty (dumb stupid) flashing lights on the CPU went off, the fans and pretty CPU lights started up again, so I'm not sure it actually went to sleep at all.

I then reset the power plan, so I now have...
Sleep after: 15 minutes
Allow hybrid sleep: On
Hibernate after: Never
Allow wake timers: Enable

However, the same thing happened when I put it to sleep.

Does any of this make sense? I'm a bit lost now.

A possibility and never a bad thing to check a drive for errors, but a corrupt file can be corrected with dism in most cases. He did not indicate that his system is exhibiting any other problems. If there is corruption that can't be repaired, a repair install should do the trick.
Checked both internal disks and no problems.

@MrYossu Do a web search and for "unable to wake from sleep aorus x570" You are not alone. I don't think it has anything to do with the latest windows update. The reports go all the way back to 2020.
Hmm, seems so, although I haven't (yet) seen anything that helps.

Thanks for the help, any other ideas?

the fans stopped whirring, and the pretty (dumb stupid) flashing lights on the CPU went off, the fans and pretty CPU lights started up again, so I'm not sure it actually went to sleep at all.
I am kind of confused myself. If the fans shut down and the power light started blinking, it did sleep but some event immediately woke it up.

Check if there are any wake timers active. From cmd prompt as admin type powercfg -waketimers
Make note of exact time and put computer to sleep. If it immediately wakes up on its own, from cmd prompt as admin type powercfg /lastwake
It should tell you what woke your computer last.

If no joy there you'll have to poke around in event viewer and I will say it's not an easy task. The following instruction is copied and pasted from Lifehacker site. I copied only what you need to use event viewer. Again you need to make note of exact time of event as event viewer is overwhelming in its information.

"you can deepen your search by consulting Windows’ Event Viewer. Pull that up by typing in “Event Viewer” after clicking on the Start button. When it loads, click on Windows Logs on the left-most folder structure, and then select System. You’ll then want to poke through the logs to find the approximate time when your system woke up and see what Window can tell you.

Other information you might be able to glean from the Event Viewer is whether a scheduled task slept (or woke) your system or if some kind of network event was to blame (e.g. something used your system’s Wake-on-LAN feature). You’ll also see if your system’s power button turned on the PC.

Browsing through the “Kernel-Power” source might also shed a little extra information on why your system powered on (or off), but it probably won’t be exactly what you’re looking for. I’d stick with checking (or filtering) for the “Power-Troubleshooter” source, first."

All of your issues sound more like the BIOS (or UEFI firmware) has reset the Wake from Sleep on USB setting to default - which could be a result of a BIOS update pushed through Windows Update.

Check your BIOS / UEFI firmware settings to make sure that is enabled, otherwise no amount of USB input is gonna wake the machine up - because the BIOS / firmware is set to ignore it.

At least for now the sleep is working, in that your open files and apps are being restored correctly. This will allow you more time to figure out why the thing is not waking up.

Also, did you recently buy a USB hub and / or move any of the cables from your KB / mouse to new slots or anything like that? These could also play a factor.

Hmm, I think I may have found something. Some time last week, I tried to start up a virtual machine, but got a message about AMD-V not being enabled in the BIOS. Now that's odd, as I use VMs fairly regularly, and enabled AMD-V when I first got the PC. I was a bit bothered by this, but didn't think too much of it. I re-enabled and carried on. However, I just tried to start up a VM, and got the same message.

I rebooted and hit the Del key to go into the BIOS, and it came up with a message saying "BIOS has been reset. Please re-config your BIOS setup items if needed."

This implies to me that something has changed the BIOS without my knowledge. Whatever it is seems to have disabled AMD-V twice in the past week (never having done it before), and may also have done something to prevent the mouse and keyboard waking up the PC.

I looked in the BIOS, but couldn't see anywhere to adjust a setting for waking the PC from sleep, so if anyone is able to advise that would be a help.

Also, did you recently buy a USB hub and / or move any of the cables from your KB / mouse to new slots or anything like that? These could also play a factor.
Nope, none of the USB devices have been moved, and no new ones added.

Thanks again, don't know if any of this helps.

I looked at Gigabyte site again. There are 2 versions of your board. The above is for rev 1.0 and here is for ver 1.x ( which is wifi equipped board)
However, for both boards bios F37 is the latest bios issued by Gigabyte.

As John said earlier, did you check to see if WU installed a bios update? If you are running Pro, you can stop automatic driver updates in group policy. If you run Home you can use reg file-Option 2 in this tutorial Enable or Disable Include Drivers with Windows Updates in Windows 11 Tutorial
As far as I can see, the last driver updates were on the 5th Dec, along with some the day before (pretty much when I installed Win11 I think), so I doubt it's that, as both the AMD-V and sleep issues only started happening last week. Please see the attached screenshot from my update history.

Which makes it even more strange that I have version F37c, which doesn't appear on either page!

Please see the attached screenshot and see if I'm missing something.

Thanks again

I believe you have a piece of software "phoning home" and that is what is waking it up after you put it to sleep. You say everything works as it is supposed to in a clean boot state, therefore there is a software conflict ...that's what a clean boot does...eliminates any software interference when troubleshooting a problem of any kind. Weeding it down to the one in question is a slow and arduous process but if you will follow Brink's tutorial, it may take some time testing but you will find it.
