Unless we could replace the appropriate system files with the 23H2 version. I will try that once the official 24H2 release is out in October or November and post here. Sorry, I don't use Insider's versions.

24H2 build 26100.1 is said to have been signed off as the RTM build being given to OEMs. It may not be complete yet, but it's unlikely there will be any more changes to the installer or the hardware checks before release.

My main PC supports PopCnt instruction (see 2nd system specs), but my test laptop doesn't (see 1st system specs). If my experiments are not able to make 24H2 work in my laptop, I will just leave it to 23H2. For at least a couple more years it should be able to run all applications without any compatibility issues. After, say 2026, I will see what I can do.

I've just downloaded Insider preview of W11 24H2, and burned it to USB, using Rufus.

Target Machine is Dell 5810, Xeon V3 (Unsupported), has TPM 2.0

Install went smoothly, no problem, and also fully updated.

Now wondering, if I should just sell my current 11th Gen Dell 7090 Mini (Bought specifically to run W11), and just get another few 5810s, for peanuts.

With the advent of Windows Hello and Passkey support, I added both to Mr refurbushed Optiplex 9630, which is driven by an i7. I have Windows Hello via PIN, Windows Hello via USB fingerprint reader, and MSA already had Passkey support.

You need a minimum of two cores to run Windows 24H2 so even if your chip instruction set supported SSE4.2, it still wouldn't run on your AMD Barcelona processor.

I thought an unsupported device was not suppose to be able to boot 24H2?

An unsupported CPU cannot boot 24H2 if it doesn't have the SSE4.2 instruction set.

As long as it has SSE4.2 any old unsupported cpu can run 24H2, such as this Pentium B950 from 2011.

With PCs, with TPM2.0, secureboot and UEFI Bios, made 2017 onwards, available for <= £100 GBP on ebay, why are people wasting valuable days/weeks of their life, still trying to get Win 11 23H2/24H2, installed on older machines !?

For fun, for the challenge - some of us just don't like to throw away perfectly serviceable old kit :wink:

However, the dual core processors from AMD and Intel, and clones thereof, should need nothing more than 24H2 and PowerShell x64 v5 or later and proper graphics support.

You're thinking about a different kind of "unsupported." We can get around the "supported" requirements for Windows 11 (any version), but we can't get around the absolutely required SSE4.2 (or equiv.)

My storage lock up is becoming a Computer graveyard, but that is just life.

Moore's law will hold up (until around 2036), so it's unavoidable, computer hardware has a shelf life, and then there's no point wasting anymore time with it.

I read about Microsoft having less Windows 11 users than Windows 10. If they drop all useless system requirements and officially allow any 64-bit PC to install Windows 11 (without hacking), the user base will increase considerably.

....what I have tried (and failed at) is native booting a .vhdx of 24H2 Canary on one of these CPUs, copied from my Dell 3190, a supported device that runs it successfully. It won't boot - just gets as far as the Windows logo before it fails and reboots, doesn't even get as far as the spinning circle.

That's going back really far -- Atoms and Pentium IV / Pentium dual core is really pushing the boat out a bit too far -- but you might get a VM to work by changing the CPU topology so long as the VM software can emulate any missing CPU instructions. If Windows issues a machine instruction that the CPU can't handle then no amount of fixing will get the thing to run.
