Solved Windows 11 24H2 has un-bypassable hardware requirements...


I would think that my computer would get the 24H2 update right away, but nothing so far. I check for updates several times during the day. I get plenty of Defender definition updates.

Just to be sure, I'm doing a clean install now on an old laptop without SSE4.2. Previously I'd tested with Insider builds, this is my first chance to confirm the worst with the release version.

First issue was that it couldn't even boot from the standard 24H2 install USB made by the MCT. It gets as far as the Windows logo, then reboots before it even starts the spinning 'loading up' circle.

Second attempt was with my hybrid 23H2/24H2 USB. That at least copied all the files, set them up and got to the first reboot. Same issue, it shows the logo, but then reboots before the circles appear. :(

Just to confirm that the install wasn't corrupt, I've taken the SSD out and put it into a slightly newer laptop that does have SSE4.2 (but very little else, Legacy bios, no TPM, and MBR only). This time it did boot and continued with the install. It has just finished the install and has booted to the OOBE.

I'll now take the SSD out and try it in another old AMD laptop that has POPCNT, but no SSE4.2, only SSE4a. This one stalls at the Windows Logo, no spinning circle, but no reboot either.

I've now put the SSD back in the one with SSE4.2 and will complete the OOBE.

Yep, seems SSE4.2 is essential.... :(

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

For a supported device the rollout will be phased. Only a very few will have seen it offered so far, certainly not any of my supported devices. There is a trick though to get windows Update to see and download it for you on a supported device. See my posts #36 and #46 here:

Would Windows update show this update to computers that are unsupported though? I can’t see why it would if an in-place rejects the PC, wouldn’t Windows Update just not offer the update altogether?

I was hoping another enablement package would become available

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Yes, that worked for me too. Did you click 'check for updates' after that? I found that when I did that although Windows Update would find and install 24H2, it didn't add it to the Update History. So I tried again.....

To be honest, I never checked the Update History after installing it. I just checked now, and it's there.

I'm trying to install 24H2 on an older computer I have. Running cpu-z will show that I have SSE4.2

I used Rufus to put the ISO on a USB stick. When trying to upgrade (not clean install) my Windows 11 23H2 I'm getting this error:
"The processor isn't supported for this version of Windows."
That's the only error message I get, the others have been taken care of by Rufus.

Any solutions?

I had the same error or message popup. My CPU also has SSE 4.2

Run these commands in CMD before the in-place upgrade or download the batch file. The commands are from RUFUS to be installed in the next update.

The command setup.exe /product server is the easiest way to bypass the system requirements.

If you are using an ISO file, you must first mount the ISO file.

- Download Windows 11 24H2 ISO file.
- Mount the ISO file.
- Run the following command, replace "X" with the drive letter of the mounted iso file.

X:\setup.exe /product server

- In this mode, the Windows 11 installer thinks it is installing Windows Server Edition and does not check the Windows 11 system requirements.

So far this is the only method that still works. The older method that we replaced a certain file from Setup cache doesn't work in 24H2.Don't forget to disconnect from the internet and never connect until the upgrade is complete, or it will fail!. After you confirm in Settings->system->Info that you upgraded to 24H2 you may connect to the internet to activate and install the remaining Windows updates.

Which method are you talking about, spapakons? I know at least two methods that work.

A. There are a few methods that work.
B. If you upgrade properly running setup.exe from the ISO whilst in the Windows environment, you can select don’t download updates.

FACT:

setup.exe /product server - works
The reg edits supplied by the maker of RUFUS - work.

OPINION:

The only thing being achieved here for quite a few posts is members trying to scream louder than the member before them and confusion for any members that are new to this stuff.

I am talking about loading a Command Prompt as Administrator and execute the command setup /product server. Only this method works for upgrading to 24H2. At first screen you can select not to download updates during the installation, but I suspect it will do it anyway. Also I have confirmed with at least 10 unsupported computers that the upgrade to 23H2 fails if you don't disconnect from the internet, probably because of a hidden online compatibility check. Probably the upgrade to 24H2 will fail too, do I insist to disconnect from the internet, just in case.
