Windows 11 Home Cannot Manage old Seagate NAS Files

Window 11 Home
Hi, I've just bought a new Laptop with Windows 11 Home and I cannot manage the files on my old Seagate Personal Cloud NAS. My old Windows 10 machine works fine. I can see the NAS with File Explorer, and I can Map the Drive. I can login and manage the files if I connect using the drives IP address and login credentials. However, I want to manage the NAS via Windows. I read many so called solutions where I've enabled SMB access and via Powershell guest logins. The error message from Windows is saying I do not have permissions for this network resource. Can anyone offer any suggestions on a fix?

Thanks
Nick.

Hi Nick, welcome to the forum!
Since you can map the drive and log into the web interface via the IP address, your network connectivity is completely fine. Windows 11 has much stricter default security rules than Windows 10. It often blocks or fails to pass anonymous credentials to older NAS operating systems, resulting in that exact "permissions" error.
To fix this, you just need to explicitly tell Windows 11 which credentials to use for your NAS. Try these three quick steps:
1. Add the NAS to Windows Credential Manager
  • Press the Windows Key, type Credential Manager, and press Enter.
  • Click on Windows Credentials.
  • Click Add a Windows credential.
  • For Internet or network address, type the IP address of your NAS (e.g., 192.168.1.X). Tip: Make a second entry typing the network name (e.g., \\Seagate-Cloud) just to cover both bases.
  • Enter the User name and Password you use to log into the Seagate web portal, then click OK.
2. Clear out any stuck, broken connections
  • Right-click your Start button and select Terminal or PowerShell.
  • Type net use * /delete and press Enter.
  • Type Y and press Enter to confirm. This forces Windows to drop the old, failing connection attempts.
3. Remap the drive using the IP address
  • Open File Explorer and go to This PC.
  • Click the three dots (...) on the top toolbar and select Map network drive.
  • In the Folder box, use the IP address path (e.g., \\192.168.1.X\YourShareName).
  • Leave Connect using different credentials unchecked so Windows automatically grabs the login details you saved in Step 1.
  • Click Finish.
Let us know if that clears up the permission block and gets you back into your files!

The NAS may be using SMB1, which is disabled by default on Windows 11 for security reasons.
