Hello Windows Insiders!

Today, we are making this year’s annual feature update, Windows 11, version 26H2 (Build 26300.9278), available in the Release Preview Channel for customers to preview ahead of general availability later this calendar year.

Windows 11, version 26H2 will be delivered as an enablement package (eKB). This means that Windows 11, versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 use a shared servicing branch. It also means that they share the same new features and enhancements delivered through our continuous innovation efforts. As a result, many of the features and improvements available in Windows 11, version 26H2 might already be familiar, as they have been gradually introduced through monthly updates.

To use the correct enablement package based on your currently installed build:

KB5122776 is the enablement package for the Insider Experimental Preview Build 26340. In the installed updates list, it shows up as “Feature Enablement for Windows (Ge) 26H2 Insider Refresh - KB5122776 - 2026.08 A - BuildNumber Update.”

KB5121794 is the enablement package for the retail 26H2 release, listed as “Feature Enablement for Windows (Ge) 26H2 - KB5121794 - 2026.07 D.”

For commercial customers, Windows 11, version 26H2 enables several experiences that were introduced in earlier releases but not previously enabled by default for commercial devices. This includes Windows settings backup, app-specific actions from the taskbar, and some File Explorer enhancements. For guidance on how to prepare for Windows 11, version 26H2 in your organization, see Get ready for Windows 11, version 26H2.

Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel can install Windows 11, version 26H2 via our “seeker” experience in Windows Update. This means if you are an Insider currently in the Release Preview Channel on a PC that meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements, you can go to Settings and Windows Update and choose to download and install Windows 11, version 26H2. Once you update your PC to Windows 11, version 26H2, you will continue to automatically receive new servicing updates through Windows Update (the typical monthly update process). If you are a commercial customer enrolled in the Windows Insider Program for Business, you can deploy and begin validating Windows 11, version 26H2 on PCs in your organization using Windows Update client policies and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Azure Marketplace will be available later today. Should any issues arise, IT admins in organizations deploying Release Preview updates can request Microsoft Support.

I suppose I should have mentioned that the first couple of times I tried to extract the msu file downloading with FireFox it wouldn't extract. I don't remember the exact error message. Anyhow noticed the flag for the download in FF downloads that it was blocked from completing. Allowed it then the file would extract properly.

I had to download the retail enablement package and installed and restarted the PC first and then go to Windows Update

Yes but Unfortunately it failed to upgrade through windows update. I am trying to do in place upgrade with 26300-9278 ISO right now

Don’t know yet. Let what the installation options are. I am good to go! I had to use Rufus to accomplish this task.

I had notice every time when there was a major upgrade my unsupported PC is unable to upgrade through Windows Update. I had to upgrade with Rufus from an ISO. For minor upgrade there is no problem upgrading through Windows Update.IMG_7004.webp

While unsupported PC's are allowed to install normal Monthly Updates, but they're blocked from Feature Updates (jumping a Windows release, ie. 25H2 to 26H2).

Rufus and other 3rd-party tools can overwrite the registry, so the HW checks are temporarily bypassed. The bypass is not permanent, but you only need it right before installing a Feature Update.

As 25H2 to 26H2 could be done with an enablement package, I assume that it wasn't a feature update.

24H2 to 25H2 wasn't, either.

25H2 and 26H2 Feature Updates are done via Enablement Packages. Same as 23H2 to 22H2.

Obviously you can download the EP update package and install it (bypassing all checks). But if you're following the update path of running Setup.exe or WU, then you're bound to the requirements checks.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be pedantic. Your original post didn't make the distinction that doing a feature update using the enablement method with an unsupported system doesn't require any work around. Not everyone knows that. :-)

MS says that feature updates are annual releases, even if the underlying core code does not change.

I guess that I was thinking of transitions to the core code base. Like going from 23H2 to 24H2.

Supposedly, 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 all use the same code base.

I upgraded my unsupported laptop (intel Gen6 CPU; otherwise compliant) using the enablement package. I wouldn't have received the update via Windows Update? I admit that I can't recall my history with the machine and Win11. The original update from Win10 was done using the Registry key, which I presume was provided by MS to allow developers to work with unsupported hardware. (The installer warned me that I was working with an unblessed PC.) But that was nearly 5 years ago.
