Windows 11 is awful

Compared to previous versions of windows, Windows 11 is awful. Thing is, some of us have to deal with this beast, somehow. Most out there don't care, but some of us do. Otherwise we wouldn't have these forums for trying to solve some of this.

Not pointing any fingers, but that doesn't mean being some kind of uncritical fanboy about it, either. They sometimes deserve to be ripped with all the (mostly new) bullsh*t they're trying to pull.

History repeats itself. When Windows 7 were new, many said they didn't like it and preferred XP. Then Windows 10 is not good, they prefer 7, Now Windows 11 is no good, they prefer 10. It is a matter of getting used to. People often doesn't like change, they prefer something they are familiar with and feel more comfortable. Here comes the various customization utilities that alter the appearance and behavior of Windows 11 to make us more "at home".

Can't we put this thread to bed please -- If you don't like Windows 11 don't use it --if you prefer Windows 10 etc run that until the end of the universe in a Virtual Machine .

All Os's have faults -- same as with human beings !!!

Get over it -- or join a developement group which can make things better. Destructive criticism is useless and pointless in the extreme. Constructive criticism can often be helpful.

My first couple of experiences with 11 I would have agreed with him about 11 , I thought it was sh!t,
I am still not wild about it or singing it's praises but after installing the latest builds of 23H2 and 24H2 and using them a bit it grows on ya but only after you turn off and uninstall all the useless sh!t MS has built into it.

I was lucky? Being born with the ability to disregard something I don’t need or use and ignore that it’s there. What I do need and use I bring to the forefront and I never have to see the rest.

I’ll add, I don’t see how the ElevenForum is any different to the Seven, Eight or TenForums? Not that I have looked at statistics. People always want to manipulate an Operating System, regardless of which Operating System, is that not true?

Nobody forces anyone to use Windows 11 (apart from Microsoft that ends support for older Windows versions). You can either keep using older Windows versions, even XP, as long as they meet your needs with an updated Antivirus. Or you can use utilities to change the parts you don't like in Windows 11, like we all do. I hardly like a version of Windows out of the box. I remember in Windows 95 that I could not figure out how to copy files to a new location. In Windows 3.1 there was a utility called File Manager that displayed a directory (aka folder) tree and to copy a file you selected it, clicked on Copy and you browsed to the new location, much like Copy to works today. Since Windows 95 Microsoft changed that with the newer method of first copy the file and then paste it to the new location. Later in Windows XP, I could use the Copy to button to copy directly (very convenient) without doing two steps. Thankfully the old familiar File Manager wasn't removed, but only hidden in Windows 95, so I could load it and copy "the familiar way". Since then using workarounds to do things "the familiar way" is not unusual.

PS: If you keep a copy of File Manager you can use it in newer Windows versions (just for fun), such as Windows 7, but it doesn't support long filenames, only 8.3. Haven't checked it if still works in Windows 11 but without long filename support is very limited.

I don't think Windows 11 is awful compared to some of the old versions. Does anyone remember Windows ME (Millenium Edition)? Now that was truly awful, unstable and was a dog of an OS.

PC World nicknamed it the "Mistake Edition'!

The first Windows I used was 3.1. The most stable version I've used was Windows 2000, for me that was well nigh bullet proof.

The nickname of Vista in Greek was "svista" (delete them, we use plural as Windows is plural). I remember everyone didn't like Vista because it deliberately made the computer much slower in order to make you upgrade or replace it. We were formatting the disk and installing Windows XP. For those manufacturers that didn't provide XP drivers on their site, we had to use tools like Speccy or Aida64 to find out exactly what hardware it is and then download the XP drivers from each respective device manufacturer site (Intel, AMD, Realtek and others). I was clever enough to keep a small database with the most common drivers so I didn't have to go through all this trouble again. In laptops with new storage controllers that Windows XP Setup could not detect the disk you cannot use the floppy disk to load the drivers, so we used tools like nLite to inject the driver into the XP ISO and then burn a new CD-R with the driver included.

I'm the OP. W11 came on a new laptop. Now, 2 weeks later, after removing a lot of the crap and modifying a bunch of things, I too am getting to like it. For one thing it seems much faster.

See? We hate the new at first because we don't like changes, but eventually we get used to it. The "good old" and convenient was "new and annoying" at first.

A new laptop? If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times, "If I was given a brand new PC (laptop or desktop), the very first thing I'd do, is plug in my Flash Drive and boot up to a Clean Install of Windows 11/Pro/64, Optimum 24h2, V4.2".
I have that OS, and I absolutely LOVE it!

I'd NEVER start up a new PC with the original MS Windows 11 on it. Just too much MS BS, as I like to call it.
With the version I use, all the MS BS has been skillfully removed, by expert hands, and what remains is an OS that is FAST, much smaller than OEM, and FREE. And it runs every one of my programs, without freezes, BSOD's or any of that annoying CRAP. And NO MS Updates to screw things up.

I firmly believe, that it's all the extra CRAP that MS crams into their OS's that cause all the problems. It's like trying to haul 2 tons of rock in a 1/4 ton pickup truck. Maybe a few of you can relate to that analogy. There WILL be problems!

For those who hate Windows 11, I just wish I could install it for them, and set it up the way I set up my own. Then I think they would love it as much as I do. Happiness with any OS is all in the way that it's set up on Day One.
As a computer tech, I've worked on many PC's that were never set up properly, and they ran like crap, got loaded up with garbage, and crashed a lot. After the proper Set Up, they ran GREAT! Better than new!!!
Every NEW computer should only be installed by a professional technician, who knows how to properly configure a new system, and not by an end user.

I agree, at least the some of the ones complaining about it, are showing some of their own personal issues with it. I'm sure these folks here, don't have a patent on their issues, because they are millions on this planet that are not members here, that could be having some of the same issues. Personally, this has been a really good thread, rather you love 11 or not love it, you have a choice to participate. I've always heard the easiest job on earth is being a critic.
