Windows 11 updates to pro from windows 10 Home version?

Windows 11 Version problem during installation. First, let me describe my system. i have three bootable disks on my computer, each of which has a discrete and activated version of windows 10 ( one the Pro and the other two are home versions). I selected one of the two home versions to install from the MS site ISO. running setup from the selected home version disk, I got a screen asking how I want to install windows 11 ( I chose to keep everything, not clean install).

The next screen asked what language and version of windows. Only the pro version could be selected. I assume that the setup decided my home version was the Pro. I proceeded to install the pro anyway and it went surprisingly smoothly. The installed version is now identified as windows 11 pro with a digital license. I subsequently reverted back to my Windows 10 installation, but now the Windows 10 installation is a fully activated the Pro version.

Why was I not offered to install the home version?

Why does the setup not identify my win10 installation as the home version?

Is what was my home version (now identified as pro) going to screw up my digital activations on the other two disks, as I now have 2 pro installations on my computer when previously MS correctly thought I had one?

wow..getting dizzy reading that...lol. I understand you. Um I just read about this online somewhere. Lots of people have your same issue. Sorry I wish I had more to help you. I may suggest calling Microsoft.

It may have been because you did not unhook (the power cables) or disabled the other drives in the Bios before you attempted the update.

Your key associated with your MS Account may have just taken over, windows will do that.

How many drives did you see on the drive selection screen ?

Yeah, that does not make sense at all. I've experienced not a too dissimilar happy anomaly with Windows license *types*. I have only Pro editions which use the same Microsoft account. I upgraded Windows 8 Pro OEM to Windows 8 Pro retail years ago and have been using that product key for Windows upgrades on the main PC only. However, other Pro OEM editions on another PC connected to the same Microsoft account also show as retail editions. Well... I'm just going with it. Nothing to see here. :-) Anyway, I personally wouldn't fight it, but if reverting to the Home edition is desirable then try changing the product key from Settings-->System-->Activation-->Change product key. Please let me know what happens...

If your motherboard had W7 to W10 Pro on it then Pro was registered on Microsoft servers. Your Pro upgrade is due to this factor (most likely) and you would not have to pay anything for Windows 11 Professional. Nice! Happened to me with W7 Pro long ago on a different motherboard.

No so much lucky but more that you forgot you had a Pro version of Windows working on that motherboard.

You cannot downgrade Pro to Home by changing the product key.

Yep. Once you are on Pro it takes a registry hack and in-place re-install to go back to Home.

Yes. You can go from Home to Pro but you can't go from Pro to Home without doing a clean install or restoring from an image.
