Windows 11, version 26H2 is now generally available, delivering the next annual feature update for Windows 11. Built on the same servicing foundation as Windows 11, versions 25H2 or 24H2, version 26H2 continues Microsoft focus on providing a predictable, low-disruption update experience for organizations while delivering the latest Windows innovations, security improvements, and management enhancements.

Windows 11, version 26H2 is delivered as an enablement package for eligible devices running Windows 11, versions 25H2 or 24H2. This means you can move to the latest release with minimal deployment overhead and a streamlined installation experience.


What is Windows 11, version 26H2?​

Windows 11, version 26H2 is the latest annual feature update for Windows 11 and continues Microsoft annual release cadence for commercial customers.

Like version 25H2, version 26H2 shares the same servicing branch and underlying code base as previous releases. New features and capabilities have been delivered to supported devices through monthly cumulative updates, with some functionality remaining dormant until activated by the version 26H2 enablement package. This approach reduces disruption while simplifying validation and deployment planning.

Why an enablement package?​

Traditional Windows feature updates often required a full operating system upgrade. For eligible devices running Windows 11, versions 25H2 or 24H2, version 26H2 is activated through a lightweight enablement package.

An enablement package:
  • Activates features already present on the device.
  • Installs similarly to a monthly quality update.
  • Requires a small download.
  • Typically results in faster installation times.
  • Allows your organization to use existing servicing and deployment processes.
Because versions 26H2, 25H2, and 24H2 share a common servicing branch, many organizations might find that validating version 26H2 requires less effort than a traditional feature update.

Security improvements​

Windows continues to build on Microsoft commitment to security by default and security by design.

Now enabled by default​

Some features that were behind temporary commercial control in Windows 11, version 25H2 are now enabled by default in version 26H2. These include:
  • Windows settings backup, which helps preserve supported Windows settings and Microsoft Store app lists for recovery and device replacement scenarios. Existing administrator-configured policies are still honored.
  • App-specific taskbar actions that help users access common actions directly from taskbar experiences.
  • File Explorer improvements focused on improving navigation and usability within File Explorer.

Windows 11, version 26H2 continues Microsoft annual Windows feature update cadence. Installing Windows 11, version 26H2 resets the support lifecycle for supported editions, as noted here:

Deployment considerations​

For devices currently running Windows 11, version 25H2 or version 24H2, you can use existing deployment frameworks and update rings to validate and deploy version 26H2.

As with any release, we recommend that you:
  • Validate version 26H2 in pilot environments.
  • Test business-critical applications, representative hardware, and workflows.
  • Expand deployment through existing update rings.
  • Monitor deployment health and known issues.
It is also a good time to review security and compliance requirements and educate support personnel on any new functionality.

Because this release uses servicing technology like that used for monthly cumulative updates, many organizations should experience a streamlined deployment process.

They should just name their next OS something like... Windows Cockroach. :D

It is not the only one, but most other SW companies do not have a Feedback Hub that has many reports of bugs but either ignores them or waits for Patch Tuesday, for minor bugs that is OK.

No software is provably bug free but software from competent firms has fewer bugs and better software QA. Microsoft is not in this category.

I have that update which fixes FH linking to the right drive. However, when run it doesn't copy new files!

My FH is still a broke down nag of a horse. I can force it to work, but I won't ever use it. So no great loss.

I made a Macrium backup first. I just don't trust MS updates anymore. It's a small amount of time for the extra insurance and peace of mind.

Any ideas on why - after (manually) installing the enablement package to an (up to date) 25H2 VM - I do not see any of the new features?

The OS UI is completely devoid of any of the new stuff and is identical to the prior 25H2?

I guess I am not understanding what you are saying.

According to every source I have read out there - all these "features" have been piling up on mine (and everyone elses) machine - in a dormant state for months now.

All we need is the "key" (KB5121794) to unlock these features and away we go.

While I do understand that MS will be doing a controlled rollout for the "key" itself - I have read NOTHING to indicate that any of the "new" features have any way of "still arriving" to machines out there.

If one has kept a 25H2 install - 100% up to date - all the 26H2 features are already there.

KB5121794 should unlock them for anyone who wants them - like today.

After installing 26H2 this morning on my Lenovo T490, I tested 3 boot USB drives I have to see if they still work.

1. Windows recovery drive still boots fine.
2. Macrium X rescue drive still boots fine.
3. Rufus 4.15 boot drive with Mosby 3.4 which I just created yesterday under 25H2 no longer boots. I found out that the Rufus drive will boot if I disable Secure Boot in the BIOS/UEFI.

Question: Would a new 26H2 ISO contain the full feature set right out of the box? Or is that still going to have stuff seeded to it for months and months?

A lot of these feature are on a gradual roll out. I already had that particular Start setting in 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FOUR was a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (1st gen) type 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device. This has now been sold. It has been replaced by my System Eight.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.
    29 Sept. 2026 Feature Update to 26H2 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 26H2.
