You can find out before the MCT downloads and makes the ISO or USB. Just run the MCT. When it shows the copyright notice, open the file C:\$Windows.~WS\Sources\products.xml (it will open in your browser). This is the file that tells the MCT what to make, currently it says 22621.1702. In fact you don't even need to open it, if products.xml has a date of 05/05/2023 then it's still the 22H2 one.

Is there a way to direct the mct to download the giant esd, extract it and create the iso on a different partition? I dont want all that writing to the os partition I would rather direct it to a different disk.

If not, then d/ling the iso direct or the esd direct is preferable for me.

Kind of useless, the install.esd is bigger than 4GiB. Not good for FAT32.
The MCT only offers to Create a DVD.

Kind of useless, the install.esd is bigger than 4GiB. Not good for FAT32.
The MCT only offers to Create a DVD.

You could extarct the iso to ntfs formatted usb ( if your bios supports efi booting from ntfs )

Or you can use a usb stick with two partitions. If boot.wim is started from the smaller fat32 partition, setup will search all accessible partitions for the matching installation media.

Easy way:

1. create a fat32 partition a couple of gb or so. mark it active. Copy the contents of the iso ( except install.esd ) onto that fat32.

2. Create another partition ntfs. Copy only the entire sources folder onto the ntfs partition ( including the esd this time)
Alternatively plonk the entire sources folder on any other partition/disk that setup will be able to see.

Setup has behaved like that since win7.

I know that, but that means I have extra steps.
I may as well download the ISO with install.wim and split it as I've done last week.

So it does, if you ask the MCT to make an ISO. You have a choice when starting the MCT of making an ISO or a USB. If you want to make a USB it asks for one that is 8GB or larger.

I saw that, but why don't they split it in the ISO already so then I can use it also to copy to a USB?
Also, when creating the USB the damn PC froze on me and had to restart again.

My flash drives are 32GB. I hope it doesn't freeze again. It froze when I touched the mouse the 1st time.
It worked this time.

I don't bother with a USB stick, I have the Windows installer on an 8GB internal NTFS partition, I can boot and/or install from that.

I have multiple machines; I want the installation media on one flash drive that I can use on all different PCs.

That makes sense, I use an NTFS drive so I don't need to split the .wim file
