Kapersky is headquartered in Moscow Russia and has ties to Russian government. Never would I ever even think about using it.

Kaspersky is a private global cybersecurity company and, as a private company, does not have any ties to the Russian or any other government. We believe that peaceful dialogue is the only possible instrument for resolving conflicts.
This was a statement from Kaspersky.

They made this pretty clear a few months ago.
None the less, My answer is....defender or even nothing. The best AV is the one between you're ears 100%
I used to use avast, avg and most of the better rated ones( Not all at the same time ofc, gradually over the years) and one day since the first build of win 11. I ditched em and haven't needed any of em since. Its like stabilizers.

And you have 100% proof of this HOW? You believe just because they say they are not tied to FSB? Kapersky was founded in Russia. I do not know about the consensus where you live, but I am American. They could be the ONLY anti-virus company in the world and I wouldn't use or promote their product. But that's just me.

I would never use any software produced in Russia or China. Even if there have been no problems in the past, that in no way reduces chances for interference by those governments in the future.

And I would not use any AV headquartered in good ol' USA because retailers are allowed to make ridiculous claims with no evidence.

US advertisers are well known for making ludicrous claims. There is very little EFFECTIVE consumer protection in the land of the free, the land of the brave.

Absolutely nothing made in America is automatically better than things made in other countries.

Talking about security, people should use only software and services sanctioned by their government.

I like privacy, I prefer services made in RU/CN rather than in EU/US, enemy agencies do not share.

Running 74 samples:
Defender detected 93.24% - missed 5 (data encrypted) - Protected folders were not enabled though
Kaspersky detected 100.00% - missed 0 (system is clean)

Going back to the topic, Windows Defender for me.
Personally, I think Kapersky and other 3rd party AVs are not really necessary unless you have specific reason for using them.
My past experiences with these AVs are nothing but additional headache. YMMV.
Windows Defender gets it done.

On an O/S that is constantly being updated, it makes sense that M/S would be the first to know about any suspicious activity.
W11 is even more secure now, much to the chagrin of people like myself having had to purchase the latest hardware to take advantage of its benefits.
Paid for AVs are a waste of money in my opinion. Testing is only done on known in the wild infections. So what is the point?

Hi folks
For W11 these days WD is about as good as it gets for domestic versions (i.e non corporate and enterprise systems). WD has been based on the security in AZURE (Ms's Cloud system) which is almost of military strength. In any case for HOME users Identity theft and scamming is far more of a problem than the odd virus / infection.

Since a lot on these forums regularly use WU on all sorts of builds it also makes sense to use the built in security rather than play casino with a 3rd party app which by necessity has to mess around with the kernel and probably the registry.

I doubt if Messr. V. Putin really wants to get 40 roubles out of your bank account. !!!! Hacking infrastructure and causing havoc by denial of service to large important corporates e.g NYSE for example or ATC at a large airport is much more the target for hackers.

The problem with Defender isn't that it's not capable, because it is capable.
The problem with Defender is that is biased towards Microsoft.

In most cases, this isn't an issue. But in some... ^^
