Windows Search using Copilot

When in Windows Explorer, it looks like my system is now using Copilot. Often I search for file names like name:filename and now it does not work.

I do not really use copilot. Could a copilot update have changed windows search and how to I change it back,

I didn’t think copilot was intergrated into Windows File Explorer yet?
As far as I understand it, it’s still an insiders testing phase for limited users.

If you’re referring to Windows Search, that isn’t Windows Explorer (Windows File Explorer)

I don't think it is integrated directly into file explorer search @antspants (at least not yet). I assumed this user meant windows search (search box on taskbar) because Co-pilot is integrated somehow into that IF the user has Bing Search enabled in windows search. That may not be what he is referring to so maybe I should not have assumed. I've given up on trying to fully understand all that is going on with co-pilot and how it is invading everything. I just do what I gotta do to get rid of it.

Yeah they started working on it last year or maybe even 2023? Some Insiders were getting a glimpse into it, I believe.

on my surface laptop 7, in windows file explorer at the top right when searching, this now has copilot. when you click in the search box, it lights up with colors. Booleans like "name:filename" when searching for a file name does not work. On my non surface pc still the old search box.

I tried using gpedit to disable copilot but it did not work (I did a restart) after enabling "Turn Off Windows Copilot" under User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Copilot.

I also tried signing out of copilot app and that did not work (I did not restart). I have not tried uninstalling copilot yet.

For index Options, I have Classic Enabled and not enhanced. I did not change this that is what was enabled.

Edit: and I am not enrolled in insider builds.

Couple notes: I got a fresh CoPilot install just a day or so ago myself after removing it. It's very possible MS updated yours by pushing it out. I'm surprised that it would show up in production File Explorer though.

I would strongly suggest just removing CoPilot unless you really need it. Personally, I don't think anyone needs it. But that's me. I have a thread going on that right now as it keeps coming back after I removed it weeks ago. Meanwhile, if you want an excellent File Search tool with needless AI (which File Explorer and Task Bar search are clearly not), Try File Locator Lite by Mythicsoft. https://www.mythicsoft.com/filelocatorlite/download/ . It's a commercial product but the Lite version is free for personal use.

Microsoft faked AI for applications, (source: Bankrupt Microsoft-Backed 'AI' Company Was Using Indian Engineers To Fake It: Report | ZeroHedge). Wonder if and how this would impact copilot?
