Windows startup sound not working over USB-C (3.5 mm works)

I recently got a new speaker, the Edifier M60, which connects to my PC using a USB-C to USB-C cable. Everything works normally, including music, games, and other Windows system sounds, but the Windows startup sound does not play.

I tested the speaker using a 3.5 mm cable, and the startup sound works normally that way, so the issue seems to only happen when using USB audio.

I also tested the same speaker over USB-C on a Windows 11 laptop, and the startup sound plays normally there.


Things I’ve already checked:

• ErP is disabled in BIOS
• “Play Windows Startup sound” is enabled
• The USB-C speaker is set as the default audio device
• Other Windows system sounds work normally
• Restarting the PC didn’t fix it
• Tried different USB ports/cables
• 3.5 mm works normally
• Fast startup is disabled

Could this just be a USB audio initialization/timing issue during boot?

Yes, it could.
The startup sound might well be triggered before Windows has gone on to load hardware drivers & implement the audio setup.

I suggest you ask the Edifier M60 maker about this.

I guess that too. The startup sound plays before Windows have fully loaded and switched the audio output to the Bluetooth speaker. I don't know if there is a specific service for that so you could set it to "Automatic (delay)". If you do that it could delay long enough to play through the Bluetooth speaker.

Any idea why it worked on the laptop? It’s a modern laptop, but the boot process is a bit different. The laptop shows the user name with a “Welcome” message and a loading circle before reaching the desktop, while my PC goes straight to the desktop almost immediately without that loading screen. Could the laptop’s slightly slower startup be giving the USB audio device enough time to initialize before the Windows startup sound plays?

If you have Fast Boot enabled, Windows cheats and doesn't perform a full HW device inventory at boot time and caches the previous results. This makes booting appear a lot faster, but fails to take in account any HW changes since shutdown.

Without Fast Boot, it may take too long for the speaker to be recognized as an USB device, before Windows flies past the point to play the startup sound.

Nope, fast boot isn't enabled on both devices. Laptop and PC
