What is the advantage of clean install over WINDOWS UPDATES?
Most people disagree with me and go the windows update or in-place upgrade route using the iso. As I said earlier in the thread, I don't do a clean install every time but usually when there are major changes in a new version like 24h2. 24h2 forced me to this time and now that it's over, I'm glad it did. Not so much at the time, though.

I cuss all the work involved but I do love me a CLEAN system. No junk, clean registry, no old outdated drivers cluttering driverstore. A clean install gets rid of old software I never use, but never got rid of. This time, I went whole hog and deleted tons of old useless personal files and reorganized my folders in a more sensible manner. And the pièce de résistance of my clean install... it fixed a sleep problem I've had for over a year that a repair install and hours of troubleshooting would not fix. And maybe it's my imagination, maybe it just having 24h2, but I swear it seems faster.
Did I mention, It's clean.

Why? I like the fresh clean feeling of a new unadulterated registry and the clean feeling of knowing there's no malware on my system.
I love that feeling...

I've never had a problem upgrading over an existing version that I'm using. It might be because I'm not constantly trying to tweak what I really don't need. ;-)

I didn't mention it before, but I'll let WU do the updates, but for Feature Updates... it's the In-Place Upgrade.

The DISM clean component store command, when used with the ResetBase flag, cleans out all the old drivers.
I use backups and restores for anything I even suspect, and sometimes... just because.
The Win 11 install I'm running now, is from a Win 10 May 2020 install. :-)

Also... with the In-Place, I don't have to "wait" on the phased rollout.

What is the process and steps . Note I have unsupported PC. And how you transfer the product license?

I'm going to wait a few months before updating to 24H2. Is there any difference between using WU or Upgrade Assistant on the MS 11 Download webpage to do this? When updating from W10 to 11 WU failed but Upgrade Assistant worked. Also, if like most you're still on 23H2 and want to do an in place repair install can you still download 23H2 or will you be forced on to 24H2. I'm not clear about this. Thanks.

I am running windows 11 upgraded from Windows 10 installed in 2017.
I am running Windows 11, upgraded from 10 in October 2021, which in turn was upgraded from Windows 7 in July 2015. The original Windows 7 was 'factory reset' in June 2014.

That's more than 10 years, with 17 upgrades and one migration to new hardware.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

On my freedos laptop, I only performed a clean install the day I bought it.

2019 LTSC > 2021 LTSC > 2024 LTSC (updated using isos since feature updates are not available in WU when using LTSC)

I hate clean installs because setting up all my software again feels like a chore.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

I do too, in particular for my W7 > W10 > W11 machine. It has some software that is impossible to re-install, and that I wish to keep. Office 2010 Starter for one, that was the free Excel/Word that came with my OEM install of Windows 7. There never were any installers for that, it was only ever available in an OEM pre-installed W7 that included an Office 2010 trial.

I am running Windows 11, upgraded from 10 in October 2021, which in turn was upgraded from Windows 7 in July 2015. The original Windows 7 was 'factory reset' in June 2014.

That's more than 10 years, with 17 upgrades and one migration to new hardware.

I plan to let WU do the upgrade for me. I would like to do a clean install but I have some software that simply will not install to Win 11 no matter what I do. It's a holdover from Win 7 that I miraculously got to work on Win 10.

I tried a clean install of Win 11 when I upgraded from Win 10, but had to revert and do the WU upgrade when the software in question wouldn't re-install. I suspect that I will have a number of problems with 24H2 because some of my software is a little old, especially the electronic schematic design software I use for work. That's the program that won't re-install, unfortunately.

Depends upon the update. If I go from one major release to another, like Windows 10 to Windows 11, I will clean install.

If I am going from WIndows 11 21H2 to 22H2 or 23H2 or 24H2...then I just do those via Windows update. Those to me are more like service pack installs.

What is the advantage of clean install over WINDOWS UPDATES?
I make frequent Macrium images.

The image after a clean installation including programs is always a few
Gigabytes smaller than doing a Windows updates followed by disk clean.

Ignore the Product name, there are many places in the registry (where this is being read from) that Windows 11 is still described as being Windows 10. In fact, for all intents and purposes (such as software compatibility) it is, the Kernel for 11 is functionally almost identical to that of 10.

Look at the build numbers instead, they identify what was installed.
