Windows wont boot anymore - DISM doesnt work in Windows PE

Hello everybody,



im currently stuck trying to fix my Windows 11 installation on my main drive. So 2 days ago i tried to power on my pc only to get a bluescreen. I can’t remember what it said since it immediately rebooted before i could read out any message. I tried to fix my bootrec and other in Windows RE. Unfortunately i did a really stupid mistake in the process and managed to brick WinRE. Im currently trying to see get it back to working by using sfc and dism inside Windows PE. SFC found some files containing errors but said it couldn’t fix everything. I then tried this command in found for offline dism.



>dism /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth /source:I:\sources\install.esd



(where C is my Windows drive and I is WinPE)

But it keeps complaining about the /cleanup-image parameter. Can somebody help me. I really don’t want to reinstall Windows as the files on drive and chkdsk returned no errors.



Heres the error:



Error: 87

The cleanup-image option is unknown.

For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?.

I believe the correct command is DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:F:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess
Note
replace f with correct drive letter. Depending how you acquired the iso, you may have an install.wim rather than install.esd
You'll have to open sources folder to find out. If so replace install.esd with install.wim in your command.
If DISM is working against an online image, and if /LimitAccess is not specified, it looks for the files on Windows Update.

You can try it, but I'm betting a dollar to a donut you will have to restore an image or clean install to fix this. You do have a backup image, don't you?

If “install.esd” is read only, you’ll apparently get errors.

Can you power off and power on again and press F12 when you see the first screen?

Hello,

i have tried this command yesterday. Same command but i used the index as 5 for Windows 11 Pro. I checked via notepad on I:\ (the Windows PE environment) its a install.wim file.

Before all this i had to change the drive letters from all my harddrives since my disk0 is not my M2 SSD.

this is the video i followed:

A comment on this video mentions also from someone who has the same issue with /Cleanup-Image. He unfortunately doesn’t have an answer why it doesn’t work for him

No :( unfortunately didnt have any image backups. The file system and the files seem to be not corrupted as i can access the content via Notepad. The only thing i have is an system restore point. But this doesnt work either. It only tells me to run chkdsk on the drive. Im currently not at my computer. Im going to share later some pictures with all the errors i get so everyone can evaluate

do you mean the BIOS Setup or the Boot Setup?
In my Boot menu i have at first the M2_1 Samsung 980 NVME Drive and at two and three Ventoy

You need to use /image switch.

Hello,

as mentioned on my original post i stupidly did a mistake and destroyed my WinRE. I share you some pictures how it looks right now: IMG_8671 when i try to boot of my m2 drive. IMG_8670 when try to load into Windows RE

What’s the difference between install.esd:1 to install.esd:5?

Hello,

this is the command i execute. Only diffrence here is that i use install.wim. I have checked via notepad and there is no install.esd file.
