windows 11 up tp date.
Got a little behind in this from the weekend things to do.
So, I was going to pick up a 2T internal drive for testing this but decided to get a 4T Blue Western Digital. I will likely partition it later on for storage. So, what I have here is a Win 11 home machine (up to date ) with an internal 2T SSD and a 1T SSD as a secondary. Have never done a system recovery, so does, and will it actually work.

First test I removed the 2T, and plugged in the 4T on same cables. I made the recovery image available and rebooted. Went into the bios to make sure boot order was correct etc . Went through the process of finding the correct image and in the end i got RESTORE FAILED DIFFERENT FIRMWARE Image created EFI Computer using BIOS. So I must have missed something, maybe in the bios as this drive was initialized and formatted on this EFI PC

Whie you think that over I successfully did a recovery afterwards using MACRIUM . Went smoothly until I rebooted . Ended up with the longest boot up in my history followed my slowness across the board. Like a digital slug, or my VIC 20.

If using the inbuilt backup then that’s the problem. It’s poor at best.
Macrium/third party disk imaging software is always more reliable.

Thanks; I get that; Wondering if I missed something in Macrium when I ran the first test. Everything is there when I finally boot up, but all is terribly slow. Will try again this weekend after doing some more reading. Definitely need to find something reliable. Too much to lose.

If it doesn’t settle down after an hour then you might need to run sfc.

DIFFERENT FIRMWARE Image created EFI Computer using BIOS
Is that the exact wording? It seems a bit garbled.

boot the recovery media in the same mode. From the message that would appear to mean you should boot the recovery in EFI mode.

Basically, yes. Problem may be that I am booting from a Win 11 boot Stick not a recovery disc. Tried to burn a new recovery disc and it was a no-can-do because there were no win files available. Things have got a bit confusing for me.

Ok, friendly Englander ( My Wifeis from Reading) ran through all that code with only 1 typo Only that one pending problem; all looks good. i will reboot and let this drive cook for a while rather than putting the SSD back in. Looks like everything is here and working; just really slow.

There should be an option to boot the usb stick in uefi mode

try the one time boot menu which comes up by pressing an F key at post. It is F12 for gigabyte, I think it is F8 for asus..

Probabaly says either UEFI and the name of the stick, or Windows Boot Manager and the name of the stick

Will do; doing another win 11 image test followed by trying to get a new recovery disc. i have a laptop toi work with while this is tied up.
I will be more precise with what windows tells me when I try another recovery. I can only do so much at my age before my brain hurts :)

I don't even know a French person. I am parked on the west coast of the country. Just rains a lot here. French are around but most congregate in Quebec close to the east coast.
I can normally do screenshots with no problem. Will give this another attempt tomorrow. Win backup attempt is still going. Me off to bed.

morning all; 9:38 am here. Where I am now is with a fresh reboot and a new Win 11 image file (more testing). Keep in mind that what I am running now is from a Macrium Reflex image as I couldn't get the win 11 image to work. Issue now is that the PC is running really slow, taking into account that the drive is an HDD rather that my normal SSD.
Last night after my new WIN 11 image was finished I expected to be asked if I wanted to create a rescue disc. Didn't happen so I tried to create it on my own. This is what I got.

I don't have an installation disc for win 11. came pre installed. Big problem. I do have a win 10 installation disc but I doubt that will help.

Building a new desktop on the horizon; this was definitely a budget build based on circumstances at the time.
You should be able to download the Win 11 media & create installation media on a USB - download the media creation tool, run & follow the instructions to Create the media.
That’s been a problem with the inbuilt imaging software for some time. Microsoft themselves recommend third party software.
You should be able to restore the image created with Windows backup via troubleshoot menu or installation media now the pc boots.
It’ll certainly be slower with a HDD, I went back to a HDD temporarily (for some reason) & was surprised how slow it was after running Windows on a SSD.

It cant find winre.wim

Most 3rd party imaging /partitioning programs will also need winre.wim to create their boot media.

If you have lost winre.wim

You can extract the windows\system32\recovery folder from the installation media into c:\windows\system32

then at an admin cmd type
reagentc /enable

Easily done with 7-zip
