This tutorial will show you how to check which USB port types are supported on your Windows 10 and Windows 11 PC.

A USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is a standard cable connection interface for computers and electronics devices.

Option One

Check USB Port Types by Logo on USB Port

1 Compare the USB type, logo, and specs in the table below.

Option Two

Check USB Port Types in Device Manager

1 Open Device Manager (devmgmt.msc).

2 Expand open Universal Serial Bus controllers to see which USB port types your system supports. (see screenshot below)

That's it,

The table states that USB 3.2 Gen 1×2 can be supported on USB-B, which is incorrect because USB-B is limited to single-lane data connection. So, only USB-C can support USB 3.2 Gen 1×2 and USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. (USB-A, USB-C and microUSB can support USB 3.2 Gen 1×1 and USB 3.2 Gen 2×1.)

I would note that USB Micro B is meant for USB3.0, thus the extra connectors. I have this on one of my external HDD/SSD enclosures that supports UASP and also on an old mobile phone.

Interestingly enough, the Thunderbolt Control Center can detect a USB4 drive even on systems (like mine) that don't have a USB4 hub/controller. Who knew?

I always found micro-USB to be very flimsy, so I think USB-C should (at least in theory) be more durable. I had phones with USB-C ports for 4 years at this point, and it's been at least 6 years since the first USB-C phones have come out, I have never seen anyone IRL or on the internet with a broken USB-C connector. All latest motherboards and Windows laptops are coming with at least 1 USB-C port in them, which is also good.

For the sake of completeness─both USB 3.2 Gen 1×1 and USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 can use USB-B also. But with USB-B, when it comes to the topic of backward compatibility, it should be noted that a USB 3.0/3.1/3.2 Standard-B plug can not fit in a USB 1.1/2.0 Standard-B receptacle (even though BOTH a USB 1.1/2.0 Standard-B plug AND a USB 3.0/3.1/3.2 Standard-B plug CAN fit in a USB 3.0/3.1/3.2 Standard-B receptacle). The reason why the newer (or "less old"...) plug can't fit in there is because it looks like this:
