Disable waking up from hibernation for good

I know it's a real pain to hunt down all the different settings which make the PC wake up in the middle of the night, such as wake timers in the power options, automatic maintenance, and individual devices (see screenshot).



I disabled everything that can wake up the PC but it still happens occasionally, and the cuplrit seems to be always some device (usually keyboard/mouse), which re-enabled the "allow this device to wake the computer" setting, so I have to go through all peripherals, USB devices and network adapters again to find it. I'm not sure why this stupid setting gets re-enabled sometimes, it might happen when the USB port has changed where it's plugged in or after some driver or Windows update, but it's hard to pin-point.

My question is: Can I completely disable waking up from hibernation on the OS level regardless of individual device settings? Or maybe it's possible to prevent power-on by anything other than the power button in the BIOS settings? I've already disabled modern standby (S0 low power), hybrid sleep and fast startup, so the PC should be "really" off (S5?) in the hibernation state...

Allow this device to wake the computer

Make sure you take the ticks off in your Network adapters and any USB controllers in Power Management
Also you could run this in command prompt (Run as Administrator)
powercfg.exe /hibernate off

The ticks come back. Also, I don't want to disable hibernation, I want to disable wakeup by anything else than the power button.

My ticks don't come back on, have you also checked all the Human Interface Devices to see if any ticks are on?
I also have in the power options it set to High Performance NOT Balanced (Recommended) and have turned off Put the computer to sleep.
See if any of these helps with your situation.

That's useful to see which devices have the wakeup enabled (powercfg -devicequery wake_armed), but everything else does exactly what the device manager GUI does. I need some setting or group policy to disable wakeup altogether. Or in the worst case, a command to disable wakeup for every device, not just a specific one, which can run as a startup task. A very cumbersome way would be to parse out all device names returned by powercfg -devicequery wake_armed and then disable every one of them in a loop...

This will disable "allow device to wake" for all devices that currently have it enabled.

Hibernate is S4. S5 is Soft off. System power states - Win32 apps

So, "really off", or Mechanical off (G3) is when you flip the power switch (mechanical tilt switch) on the backside of the power supply unit or you physically unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. The power button (push button) on the front panel (or on the top) of a normal desktop PC case uses a 5-volt DC signal to turn on the PC. To be able to respond to this button, it needs to consume a little bit of power, which is what S5 does.

Similarly, the onboard Ethernet adapter of the motherboard also typically continues to consume a small amount of power even if Wake-On-LAN (WOL) either has been disabled in the BIOS or has been disabled in the settings that appear on the Advanced tab [of the adapter's Properties window panel in Device Manager]. This allows other network devices on the same Ethernet-based network to detect that the PC is still present on the network. (Even, if the PC is in S5.)

Are you saying the only difference between hibernation and "actually off" is that the PC can wakeup from peripherials or network events? Unplugging the power cable after hibernation and plugging it in again will force the PC from S4 to S5, but it will resume normally from hibernation when it's turned on again. Also, wake on LAN (and wake on other stuff) can be enabled in the BIOS and will work in S5, i.e. after a full shutdown. Then what's really the difference between S4 and S5?

A gaming PC with modern standby? I've never heard of that one.

You might want to make sure you have the latest bios installed.

Is it not a thing on Desktop? I don't know if it was ever available, I just turned all that stuff off via command line, and powercfg /a lists only normal standby (S3) and hibernation as available, nothing else.

While not impossible (it all depends on the bios) I have seen it only one time in a PC. That was a Dell all-in-one that used a laptop motherboard. I have never heard of it from a 3rd party PC board.

One difference between S4 and S5 is that, unlike S5, S4 is Save To Disk, or Suspend To Disk so the system state is saved to a temporary file (hiberfil.sys if you're on Windows) on the local disk.

When you unplug the power cable from the PSU or you flip the tilt switch of the PSU from on to off, the PC goes to G3 (Mechanical off) from whatever the power state that the PC was in. Then when you restore power on the PSU, the PC goes to S5. Whether or not the PC has the ability to be woken up from S5 via WOL (S5 WOL) is system-sepcific so it depends on the manufacturer. The ability to be remotely shut down (Shutdown Wake-On-LAN) is very common, as just about every PC that is equipped with a Realtek GbE Family Controller has that ability, but the ability to be remotely turned on (S5 WOL) usually will be absent on cheap and mid-priced motherboards, as this feature tends to be more commonly found on business-oriented and high end/entry-level high end motherboards (such as the one that you have).

To summarize, after an AC power loss has occurred and the PC didn't automatically switch to DC power i.e. due to having no battery or the battery charge was depleted (or the PC did make the switch to DC power, but the battery ran out before AC power could be restored), you can still resume from Hibernate by turning the PC back on like you said, but not all motherboards will let you turn the PC back on remotely. If your motherboard has S5 WOL, normally it also means that S5 WOL can be disabled separately in the BIOS so it will be possible in the BIOS to do things like, e.g., disable S5 WOL while still leaving WOL enabled for S3/S4. These days, the BIOS of a motherboard that has S5 WOL will very often also have ErP mode (Energy-related Products).
