Disk Cleanup doesn't clear Windows Update Cleanup


Well damn, I've been chasing a non issue. It's odd my old dell optiplex from 08 is running great. It seems to clear it. So the fix it to wait.

So I get its a bug, why when I did clean install from a bootable USB I didn't get the unsupported machine message, then when I tried both update recovery repair options one from the ISO the other through windows recovery did I have to use the Brinks BAT file to mod the reg to get it to run?

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Your specs say you have 7th generation Intel i7-7700HQ. That is an unsupported processor for Windows 11, the minimum requirement is 8th gen.

Did you use Rufus to make that bootable usb? There are options in Rufus to bypass the system requirement checks. If so that may be why you could install without a problem.

That wouldn't help you bypass the checks when using an ISO for an in-place upgrade, or a repair upgrade with Windows Update though. That's why you needed Brink's registry mods.

Having said that, Windows 11 should run well on your system, I have it running on a 1st gen i5.

It's odd, I basically got the machine for free, with no drive. I made a windows 11 USB install drive and booted right to it. So I never saw any unsupported errors installing or even after boot. That is until I tried a windows recovery update. That's when it popped. Just curious is all. I've got an old dell optiplex 960 that's been on windows 11 since there was an option to go to it.

Yours should run very well, the benchmark for your i7-7700HQ is actually a few percent higher than that of the 10th gen i7-10610U in my fully supported System Three (it's in my specs under 'Other Info').

my only complaint is that I can't get the File explorer nav button display correctly, if I tap the three dots it opens out of view and I can't access it.

Sorry, that system will never be able to run 24H2. The CPU does not support the POPCNT instruction (SSE 4.2).

More info about this: 24H2 requires that a CPU support the PONCNT instruction. That instruction is part of the SSE4.2 instruction set. Your CPU only has SSE4.1. Those instructions were introduced in 2008 with the i5 and i7 CPUs. Ironically, your CPU is also a vintage 2008 but it did get blessed with the SSE4.2 instructions. As a result, it will never run 24H2.

More info about this: 24H2 requires that a CPU support the PONCNT instruction. That instruction is part of the SSE4.2 instruction set. Your CPU only has SSE4.1. Those instructions were introduced in 2008 with the i5 and i7 CPUs. Ironically, your CPU is also a vintage 2008 but it did get blessed with the SSE4.2 instructions. As a result, it will never run 24H2.

What build did you install? That bug has been seen before in some of the Insider builds, Release Preview and Dev. You could just make the Explorer window smaller so you can see the menu.

Another workaround is to click the ... 'see more' then use the up arrow on your keyboard to select the item you want. Even though the list is off the top of the screen, the 'info-text' pop-up telling you what you have selected is always visible. Find the one you want and press Enter.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.
