do you use winaero tweaker because in the menu
file explorer > icon cache size
you can increase the cache to 1024 from the default
winaero.com

also a few other changes can be made to explorer if so wished.

edit. when explorer was crashing on my system i found it to be a service.
Sonitude SECOMN Service

once i had disabled this service explorer worked normally but with the above tweaks enabled

I think freebooter already had me do that a few posts back. It should be set to 8192.

How did you discover that service was the problem?

I need to go through my services... and bios settings. It's just so much work.

Looks like some trouble with the graphics driver and explorer. Intel has been bugging me for a while about a graphics driver update.

Still wondering how windows update got turned back on. It's like a virus that won't stay dead.

Well I installed the updated graphic driver, and after restarting the system seems much faster/snappier. I don't know what the graphic driver would have to do with it but it was gigantic and took forever to download, so maybe it came with something important.

Then I paused updates until march. Evidently group policy is ignored.

One thing I really hate about win11 is it seems to ignore any changes I make to it. It's like being shadowbanned where I think I'm posting when I'm really not, windows lets me think I've made changes when I really haven't.

Ok, will do, but I'm going to be making some other changes too so it won't be a perfect experiment. So far though just updating that driver was like a clog blew out and suddenly everything is faster. Search is still slow. Takes 45 seconds to find the same 7 files that an app called "files" can find instantly.
