Explorer.exe crashing

Sometimes when I enter a folder the explorer freezes then it closes, any idea what might be causing the explorer to crash?

Have you run the following yet?

sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

• Open search on your PC and type CMD, right click on CMD and “Open as admin”
• Click on the following command to copy to the clipboard, paste it into CMD. Press enter:

SFC /scannow

• Reboot your PC when finished.

After reboot:

• Right click on CMD and “Open as admin”
• Click on the following command so it copies to your clipboard and paste it into the CMD window. Press enter:

DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

• Press enter and be patient.

Are you using Explorer Patcher?
Do you use a CAD program?

Funny, this happened to me and I googled "e0434e49" then found this page lol

Actually this happens all the time in all windows versions for as long as I can remember, back to win95. Just curious if there is ever going to be a way to fix it. Even though I have 128gb ram that's never close to being used, something about Explorer fills up after a couple weeks then forces it to restart, then it shuffles all my windows on the taskbar.

It seems to happen faster if I start organizing my drives, moving files around and backing up. Seems I'm only allowed to move around so many files before explorer can't take it anymore then pukes. Win7 does it too. Microsoft must consider it a feature rather than a bug.

Yep. I think clearing the explorer cache might be a solution. As I said, it's been a problem in all windows versions ever made.

Is there a way to make explorer cache bigger?

No, I guess not. And the only way to clear it is to restart explorer, which happens automatically when it crashes.

I found it here. Change Icon Cache Size in Windows 11 and 10

"You can further increase the icon cache size and set the MaxCachedIcons value to 8192 = 8 MB. See what works best for you."

Why not make it really big? How big can it be?

The bigger the size more RAM space will be used.

I have 128gb. I have problems just using 30gb. 100gb always empty.

Can I make the cache size 1gb?

I would not go that much, make it 8MB that will do.

Ok thanks. I will try it and see.

Looks like it's been about 4 days since a restart and now when I click on a minimized window on the taskbar it will maximize but not return to minimized when clicked again. The only way to minimize a window is the - button at the top corner.

I checked event viewer but nothing there except failed updates which is strange because I had updates turned off. Maybe because I installed something from the microsoft store?

Something somewhere is running out of memory even though I have practically infinite memory.

please try
open explorer on the top bar click the 3 dot menu . . .
options > view

in this window check/tick
launch folder windows in a separate process
click apply then OK
restart explorer

see if that gives any improvement.

I remember I used to always do that in win98, xp, but I stopped for some reason and forgot why. What does it do?

Good idea though. If explorer is in a sperate process that may alleviate whatever cache is filling up.

I guess that option won't work anymore anyway. Enable or Disable Launch Folder Windows in a Separate Process in Windows 11

Separate explorer processes appear to no longer work for the new File Explorer with tabs.
