Gaming on Windows 11

@MisterEd

While all you say is true... it's a whole lot easier to just get the old games from GOG.

Like this is what you get from GOG for Return to Castle Wolfenstein... just doiuble click the setup file... and that's it, you're done.
It's $5.99 ...no muss, no fuss... it just works.

And every now and then, they give away some decent games for FREE. :-)

@Ghot

I was only talking about the games I bought over ten years ago. Most of them have to be installed from their original CD/DVDs. Many of them are probably not even available as a digital download so I am stuck doing what it takes to get them working.

Most of the games I have bought since then were digital downloads. The ones from Electronic Arts, Rockstar, Ubisoft and Steam that I have registered can be installed or reinstalled any time by logging into the respective accounts and doing so. For these games all it takes is one click to install them on any of my computers.

I spent 5 minutes looking at COG but didn't find any games there of interest.

I actually love playing older games on Windows 11. Most games that are older have been converted into standalone clients now. You can store all your pre 2005 games on a thumb drive now.

GOG games will all run on modern computers. :-)
I recommend the OFFLINE installers.
I have GOG and swear by them, but I had to go outside them to get the DLC..... And I did have to futz with the ini file to get 1920x1080.

I really miss .ini files. They made things soooo easy.
In 4x4 EVO (off road racing game), we'd open the .ini file and set the weather to zero, and all the water in the game would turn to ice. :-)

I too have all the original CDs for my old games. But as you mentioned... it's getting to be a real pain in the app sometimes, to install them. I probably have a few hundred bookmarks for "patches" to make them run CD-less and on modern hardware.

If they are going cheap... GOG is hard to beat. :-)

I don't know about the older games so I might not be much help here.

But if it's any consolation at all, DreamweaverMX 2004 and Photoshop CS2 install and load on Windows 11 without any fuss.

We have no gaming forum as of yet so I thought I'd ask here.... Anyone gaming on Windows 11 yet?

Thoughts? Issues? Concerns?

I have 11 on my main laptop, and backup desktop, but I don't game (or have games installed) on either so I've not experienced gaming on 11 yet. Currently playing Mass Effect Legendary on my main rig listed in system specs (system one).

Thanks.
Hi Dru2 I myself have used my surface pro 6 laptop to game on and with my graphics (intel graphics 620 and intel I5U) i think some games are worth gaming on with a little bit of tweaking to the settings and adding some apps you can squeeze out the most fps, in my opinion it is worth it to game on windows 11 infact i believe that it is the best operating system to game on

Most laptops have integrated graphics like yours does. That means the graphics are on the same chip as the CPU. However, some laptops have discrete graphics in addition to the integrated one. The discrete graphics are on a separate chip than the CPU. This discrete graphics is much faster than the integrated graphics.

Here are some specs for the Surface Pro 6 and my TUF Gaming A15 laptops.

Surface Pro 6
CPU: Intel i5-8250U
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620 (integrated)

ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (2022)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 6800H
GPU1: AMD Radeon 680M (integrated)
GPU2: Nvidia RTX3060 Notebook (discrete)

The discrete graphics on my laptop allows me to play some games that would not be possible with only the integrated graphics.

The games available to play on your laptop vary on how fast a graphics chip you need. Some will play fine only with the integrated graphics while others require much faster graphics. You have to check each individual game to see what graphics they require.

Some last points:
  • Not all discrete graphics are alike. If you want faster graphics you have to pay more money for them.
  • Discrete graphic chips in laptops are generally slower than comparable desktop versions. For example the RTX3060 in my laptop is slower than an RTX3060 desktop version. It also has less onboard RAM.

Cheers Win11Userr
Thanks for the reply. Do note that question has long been answered in this thread, and it was more rhetorical than anything else.

I've been gaming under 11 since moving to the OS. And yes, I agree, Windows 11 is a joy to game on. Just as good as Window 10.
