It's well known I'm no advocate for Onedrive, but in this case I agree with @pseymour. It's a sync problem, pure and simple, and had nothing to do with Onedrive's settings.

A OneDrive sync loop is caused by one of 5 things: a bad file, broken authentication, stuck diagnostic tracing, corrupted local databases, or a buggy update endlessly retrying operations. So in this user's case Onedrive indeed did go insane because it can not sync.

@TairikuOkami Because the generated files are .odl that eliminates it being a bad file and points directly to the sync engine itself being the problem. The first troubleshooting step would be a reset. If that does not stop the files being generated, the issue is deeper. Then the next step is uninstall/reinstall onedrive.

Here's the problem in a nutshell:

Microsoft quietly repurposed OneDrive folder redirection and labeled it “Windows Backup,” which misleads users into thinking they’re enabling a harmless safety feature when they’re actually moving Desktop, Documents, and Pictures into the cloud. This has caused massive confusion, broken apps, missing files, and real data loss among non‑technical users who have no idea their folder paths were changed. The worst part is that Microsoft continues pushing this feature in OOBE and updates, despite the chaos it’s causing. It’s one of the most poorly thought‑out decisions Microsoft has made, and it’s driving frustrated users toward macOS and Linux in droves.

I wouldn't say that. I'd say it's causing some users to turn off and delete OneDrive, altogether. How massive a change that is, remains to be seen, but I suspect those who delete OneDrive (like myself) are still a tiny minority.

I personally don't use Onedrive on any of my personal computers. But Onedrive is a lifesaver in an enterptise environment. You can replace your work laptop everyday without having to worry about your work files.

It works the same way for home files. It's a prime reason I use it. My files are synced on both my computers in real-time and I can never lose anything I'm working on.

I KNOW.
I simply don't want my personal data stored in a public cloud environment. For work, I don't care. I have my personal cloud space (NAS) that I can access from any device.

OneDrive and or any other online storage is as useless as you know what on a Bull. With all of the hackers in This World why anyone would trust any company's on line storage of their personal Data.. I store all of my data on SSD's.
