I don't use any of the widgets and chat features, I don't use Edge. But this keeps on installing itself at every boot. It's annoyingly frustrating. It makes me want to stay with Windows 10.

Edge Webview uses the Edge engine to enable some apps for using some web technologies, like HTML 5 or CSS. Long story short, if you uninstall it, some apps will not work properly.
Some apps, I have about 2-3 of those, if you do not have any, you do not need it.

Thanks for the tip on uninstalling Webview2.

I don't think uninstalling it will cause any major issues. None of the apps that I use strictly rely on Webview2. They work completely fine on Windows 10 and I checked using Process Explorer and there isn't any Webview2 processes running on my Windows 10. This means they shouldn't be reliant on Webview2 in Windows 11 either.

I've uninstalled Webview2 and can continue using my apps just fine. If you want to install it again, download it from here:WebView2 - Microsoft Edge Developer

Also, may be a good idea to disable the Edge update task in Task Scheduler. Under the Task Scheduler root (Task Scheduler Library), you should find 2 tasks:

- MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineCore
- MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineUA

Disable both to stop Edge from updating (which could potentially also download and install Webview2 again).

WIndows 11 Widgets (like weather and news) need Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime. There are a few other applications too, but I can't recall which one. I have disabled it as it is a huge resource hog.

If some apps need it, they can install their own, for example Audials Radio, but that can not be uninstalled.

Not in my experience...if I recall correctly, you just get an error message. And you can't run the application.

Enable gpedit.msc using Command Prompt

If you are running Windows 10/11 Home Edition, you can easily enable the group policy editor using the following commands:

Open Command Prompt in administrative mode and run the following commands:

FOR %F IN ("%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~*.mum") DO (DISM /Online /NoRestart /Add-Package:"%F")
FOR %F IN ("%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~*.mum") DO (DISM /Online /NoRestart /Add-Package:"%F")
These commands will install gpedit.msc console on your computer. After the commands are successfully executed, go to Run –> gpedit.msc. This will open the group policy editor in your Windows Home edition.

scroll down the page, there is an installer too
