install win 11 to new ssd instead of upgrading (C)?

so the update screen wants me to upgrade to win 11. I have 10 installed as the C drive. I want to put 11 on a new ssd which is labeled the (S) drive. So if I start the auto download can I park it on the ssd instead of messing with the current 10? a tutorial in plain english would be useful if you know of one....

No. It will upgrade Windows 10. Please refer to post 3 & 5

While you're ON Windows 10... make the bootable Windows 11 install media on a USB stick.
THEN... disconnect the Windows 10 drive, and do a clean install of Win 11 on the new SSD...

But what then?…..
Msongs will still have Windows 10 (which apparently looks like the preferred OS) and will still be asked to upgrade to Windows Eleven.
I don’t understand duel booting but I do know that having an OS on two drives is problematic. So duel booting will be required?
But still, the nagging for upgrading 10 to 11 will prevail, can the nagging be stopped? Is that correct? (Obviously learning here)

You can block the upgrade to Win 11. There's a tutorial for that.



What I'm suggesting is not dual booting. It's more like side by side booting.
That's how mine is set up.
One SSD has Win 10, the other has Win 11. I just hook up whichever one I want to be on at the moment.
I leave the other unhooked.

Dual Booting is another solution, of course.




My Win 10 SSD is happy to be on Win 10. It tells me I "can" upgrade to Win 11, but it's not trying to force me.










Side by side OS's doesn't really work well on a laptop. But on a desktop... it's easy.
It takes me just under 60 seconds to take the right side panel off and swap the SSD cables, and be booted to the desktop.

When swapping cables on SSDs... always disconnect the SATA power then the data.

When connecting an SSD... always connect the SATA power, then the data.
I've been doing this since July 2021.

Here's when I thought it up...



Once I got Win 11 "trained"... I hardly ever go on Win 10.
I just keep it for emergencies, and if I need Win 10 screenshots for a post.

I do spend a half an hour on Win 10... every time there's an update.
I also, at the same time, update FF, MR, Bitdefender and my bookmarks if any need updating.
Then I make a fresh Win 10 backup.

Then I'm back on Win 11, and I do Win 11 updates and fresh backup, etc.

I believe this will stop the nagging, but I'm not 100% sure.




I read a few articles about MS purposely increasing the nagging to upgrade.
Nothing definitive.

For example...




Personally... I'm waiting for some guy "down under" to come up with a better operating system, with all settings optional, that can run anything Windows can run, without emulation.

I have a dual boot system with Widows 10 on one partition and Windows 11 on another all on the same SSD. I went for a dual boot system so I could try out 11 without losing my 10 setup. I did a clean install of Windows 11 and did not install any of the apps in Windows 10 except for Office (which a new install). After installing Windows 11, I used it continually and kinda forgot about Windows 10 but, after a successful update of KB5034441, I have regained an appreciation for Windows 10. I am waiting for the release of a new DAW software which I will install in Windows 11. So, I am anticipating using Windows 11 most of the time. I find the dual boot very convenient.

thanks for your responses. let me provide more detail - I want to put the upgrade download on the new ssd. then I can try that out and put stuff on it getting it ready to use. then I will make the ssd the primary drive and not use the current drive C:

I do not understand what you are saying.

The upgrade download simply replaces many elements of Windows 10 converting to Windows 11 (keeping apps, data etc).

You cannot direct the upgrade to another drive as you would have an incomplete system.

So tell us - do you want clean install of Windows 11 or do you want a fully upgraded version with all your apps in place?

You can’t put an upgrade on it’s own a secondary drive, you need to have Windows 11 on the secondary drive to upgrade it in the first place. In that case, if you’re installing Windows 11 (tutorials in here) onto that SSD, there will be no need to upgrade, just update as pe normal.

Unless you are duel booting, you will have to unplug your current C: drive and install Windows 11 onto the secondary drive and use it as your operating system. If at that point you decide you are not happy with Windows 11, unplug the SSD with Windows 11 and reconnect your Windows 10 drive..

Easier still: make an image/backup of your Windows 10 install as it is now, onto your secondary SSD.
Then upgrade your current Windows 10 to Windows 11. If you aren’t happy with Windows 11, you can use the image to go back to the previous state of Windows 10.

You will need a Backup program that you’re comfortable using. I’ll let others advise you, there seems to be a lot of opinions here.

Hasn't anyone ever experienced F12? Or, whatever key on your own PC that gives you a Boot menu?

Having two or more OS's on the same Desktop PC is easy. It wasn't always like this, but nowadays two OS's on separate HD's or SSD's will not intermingle.
On this PC I have three OS's on three separate HD's/SSD's. Swapping cables to select the boot drive is NOT required!!!
There is also a fourth drive, with NO OS. It's my backup drive.

With all drives connected, during boot up, I just tap the F12 key to get my Boot Menu if I want any OS other than the default one. Windows 11/Pro/64 is my default OS. Saves wear and tear on the little SATA cable connectors.

So, find your Boot Menu Key, and give it a try!
