Solved Is factory reset the same as clean install?

Assuming you download some torrents and you want to hide, it would not make sense to zero fill or full format for reusing the drive yourself. It would only make sense if you give away the computer. Even then, if the new owner can be trusted (a relative or good friend) he wouldn't bother to recover any of your old data, assuming he had the technical knowledge and the appropriate tools to do so.

If you are an average homeowner, you are likely 'collateral damage' to mass surveillance, but I don't want to be collateral damage either.

No one cares, no one will snoop. And why would you need to spend money on a new drive if you give away or return a PC.
Your opening question has gotten way off topic

Well, you and I and the notional average homeowner are uninteresting nobodies, but a million nobodies become interesting enough to do mass surveillances, it is a global problem :eek1:

Yeah, the OP has been solved, and I marked the thread as such since long, but an interesting contributor showed up, why not :)
