OS
W11 Home Insider Preview + WSLg
Running W11 Insider Home Preview 22543.1000
All methods of trying to use Sleep have the same result:
Display is turned off
Keyboard/system lighting turned off
CPU/GPU fans spin down
System active light and power button light remain on
Drive light blinks briefly every few seconds (this is an SSD)

The issue is that if not plugged in, will run battery down in a few hours.

I've looked at all the sleep settings per various internet sites, but nothing seems amiss yet it won't sleep properly.

This problem has been reported by others whose laptops are hard-configured by the manufacturer to use the modern sleep state.
If modern standby is NOT hard configured by the OEM in your case, this tutorial may help you. Disable Modern Standby in Windows 10 and Windows 11 Tutorial

If this doesn't help you solve the problem, please open an administrative command prompt and type powercfg /availablesleepstates
Attach a screenshot of the results

Also check your manufacturer to make sure you have the latest bios version.

I was able to "solve" this with more of a workaround.
What appears to have happened is ASUS pushed a BIOS update, and the BIOS now does not support S3 (or most of the modes, actually). So when I used the method to force enable S3 mode, what actually happened was sleep modes disappeared from all the power options entirely. I reverted that, then found a suggestion to use hibernate. However, hibernate was also not available in the power modes. The following fixed that:

Code:
powercfg.exe /h on

Then I made the actions which would normally enable sleep, instead enable hibernate.

The above solution was found in this thread:

Hi there
Get it to start watching some current TV series at the moment -- a real cure for insomnia.

Your laptop might actually be going into Hibernate mode or Suspend (probably more likely) than into a proper shutdown.

Seriously though boot up any live distro of linux from a USB device - try shutdown ->hibernate or sleep. take your pic. If that works then problem is Windows other wise it's your hardware -- one solution is to remove the laptop's battery if you can and also to replace the Bios battery if there is one too --that's usually a small "button type battery".

If the Linux distro thing works then try re-installing Windows again from scratch.

Sorry -- just seen you've fixed it !!!! Glad it's working.

Cheers
jimbo

He didn't fix it. He is having to use Hibernation instead of [S3] Sleep.

Please would you post the response to this command
PowerCfg -a
so that your situation can be understood.

The above solution was found in this thread:
How to activate sleep states after Windows 10 install

Do note that that user's problem sounded like they had not yet allowed Windows update to run so their Windows 10 computer was running with MS's Basic display adapter, a driver that does not provide for S3 Sleep.

powercfg.exe /h on

My apologies for my poor wording. Let me rephrase. Thank you so much for posting what you did to reduce the battery drain of your laptop. Though not a solution to the widespread problem,as there seems to be none at this point, sharing what you did helps others.

I'm sure that Modern Standy is useful for some but IMHO, Modern Standby was the brainchild of an over educated idot.
