Laptop will not boot windows after RAM upgrade

So I've decided to upgrade RAM in my HP laptop running Windows 11 from 4GB to 8GB. After changing out the module I noticed the laptop wouldn't boot windows or get me to the HP screen. I can access BIOS and see that the computer sees the updated ram and have 8GB of memory available but it won't boot windows. The module was verified to compatible with my laptop. I put the old RAM back in and it booted up fine. Could it be an issue with ram stick or is Windows 11 finicky about hardware upgrades? This is my first windows 11 computer.

Hey, Is it another of the same RAM stick? Same speed, Make, Timings etc or are they different?
Also possibly worth trying the new ram module on its own and see if it does the same as with both modules in or if it wont boot with just the new one in. If thats the case it could be a bad module.

The ram that's currently in is a 4GB. Took that out and put in a 8GB. It's a single slot. I used a PNY 8GB DDR4 2400 sodimm which it says it's compatible with my laptop. Laptop is a HP 14-dq0035dx.

HP laptops and any RAM changes can be a bit finnicky. The laptops are very sensitive to what modules you put into them. Also if I remember correctly, some laptops does a memory check which takes a while. After it is done you have to save the new settings.

..not 100% sure about all what I just said and if they are the cause, but HP laptops are a pain to upgrade.

Hmmm...I think the issue is the CPU. It supports 8GB of RAM, but might not in single channel.

I would normally check Crucial for upgrades. They list none for the HP 14-dq0035dx. However, for the 14-dq0032dx, they list: 14-dq0032dx

The HP 14-dq0035dx seems to have the same specs as the 14-dq0032dx. I'm not sure why they have different model numbers.

That's an existence proof that the 14-dq0035dx can take an 8GB SODIMM.

If the laptop is bootable from a USB flash drive, you could try using a bootable memory test (memtest86+, maybe?) to see whether your new RAM is working properly in your system.

Yeah, simply going in the UEFI settings menu and choosing the "Save Changes & Exit" (usually F10) without actually changing any settings might be all that is needed to get it to work. A few months ago when I replaced my laptop's stock SK Hynix 2×4GB DDR-4 3200MHz C22 kit with the G.Skill Ripjaws 2×8GB kit of equal specs the upgrade process went easier than opening a packet of crisps.

But, I'll also add that HP is not the only brand that makes laptops that are a pain to upgrade, as other brands (like Dell) have been being fairly notorious for "vendor lock-ins" in the area of laptop-specific upgrade compatibility also, not to mention that bumping into various other issues tends to be a bit of a common thing also in addition to getting piddle-poor technical support if you're just an average consumer. Caveat emptor....

Ah. That's one thing I haven't tried to do is trying to save the settings. I'll give it a try.

I would have suggested clearing the CMOS, but that may not be easy in a laptop. Your suggestion is a good one.

To my fellow Americans, "crisps" are what we call potato chips.:) I recall when opening a package of them was easier than it is now, when a little impatience can lead to an explosion of chips, all over the floor.

hmm having a HP laptop myself I didn't think they were upgradeable. my laptop is a year old now and I have not tried to upgrade it or don't even know if its possible.

the ram would be upgradable i'd imagine. Some laptops even allow for m2's/ssd's to be added

64 gig non-upgradeable eMMC drive is too small for when feature updates are released. It will error about not having enough drive space to complete.
