Solved Latest Macrium Reflect 8 updates

Ohhhh dear... That was fairly poor oversight and execution on the side of Macrium! If the C:\ is not bootable NOR IS REFELCT!!
Okay, so we need to get this moved to a hidden partition or separate drive...

I understand you can make a USB, I have several Refelct v8 and v10 32GB USB's floating around for clients etc. But the whole point of the bootable menu is that the WIM should surely not stored on the C:\ partition??? Not another partition at the end of the drive?
MR is so advanced with overwhelming UI, I am confused why they would overly simplify this... EDIT: Thanks Kev! Step in builder to specify Macrium's dumping ground for the bootable WIM that should not be touched.

The first is so it doesn't have to to rebuild the rescue media every time you want to make a rescue USB, it just copies the existing files over.

The second is that when you add Macrium Reflect to the boot menu, it boots from the files stored here, as shown in the BCD entry.

There's nothing here that Macrium can't rebuild if you delete it, but if you have added Macrium to the boot menu it will no longer be able to boot to the rescue media.

Wouldn't matter what partition it was in if the drive dies, you'd loose the lot. A recovery USB is an essential, the boot menu option is there as a convenience, it is so much faster to boot from.

For me partitions are always going. Just had to log in and recover 2nd partition on an external M2 SATA SSD in an external enclosure.

Whether lost clusters, in the wrong place at the wrong time, or drives ""mysteriously"" converting from ExFAT to NTFS... it's usually the partition that's infected, needing rolling back, lost a drive letter, lost it's file system (in this case!), having general issues, or requiring recovery.
That's the only reason why I suggested another partition. "They don't make them like they used to!".. Surely 5GB would be enough for MR to build on, plus future rebuilds?
But it would probably require a drive letter for MR to access and build....

Nothing to lose sleep over....

Since when? I've always been able to boot from either.

I'm still on v8 8.1.8325. Is it likely Macrium will issue an updated patch to replace 8.1.8595 which seems to be causing problems? Mitch.

Since when? I've always been able to boot from either.

Flipmode was asking what would happen if you deleted C:\boot\macrium. That would kill Macrium recovery from the boot menu, because that's where the BCD entry points to for the boot files.

I ran a backup on one of our machines this morning and was offered the update to 8595 but decided to stay with 8325 until a new update is listed. I assume Macrium is aware of the problem? Mitch.

Does anyone know if the issue with 8595 has been fixed. Usually Macrium is quick to resolve issue with new versions.

Anyone tracking on their forum, do they acknowledge the issue?

What issue?

As V8 is only in maintenance mode, unless whatever issue represents a SIGNIFICANT risk of failure to do a backup or restore, or a security risk, it is unlikely an update would be hurried.

Re. tracking - feel free to look yourself.

It's a restore issue, the restore completes succesfully but reports an error. First reported on this thread here:

Mate, you won't beleive it.. I'm getting a blue screen BSOD and never had to repair/recover this w/ W11 before.

Stop Code: Memory_Management, What Failed: win32k.sys

Some sort of corruption in BCD based on stop code... But I've two stop codes - short one and long one above. I also get stop code 0xC000225.

If I press F9 after the manufacturer Gigabyte BIOS screen to enter recovery, instead of using USB W11 image, I get the following error:

Your PC/Device needs to be repaired

A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed (??? odd...)

Esc for Recovery > reboots to BSOD 0x1015 -OR- "diagnosing your PC" and recovery.
Enter to try again. > same message

F8 for startup settings > same message

I have gone into recovery from W11 ISO on USB or F9 start-up key to OS recovery. Gone into Recovery CMD Prompt and run both SFC and CHKDSK. /F/R. Reboot. Repeated... run... reboot... run... reboot... etc. CHKDSK only required 2 go's until clear. 15 times later with SFC and I fell a sleep in front of the laptop on the sofa.

Windows resource protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them ...

The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot.

The automatic repair that Windows attempts does nothing. W11 gets its knickers in a knot - reboots, attempts to repair again then reboots and attempts to start normally. Back to blue screen! Definitely something corrupt...

So are there any formal documents for using Macrium to recover BCD or relevant areas, without overwriting all of Windows?

I have shifted ALL client systems so that Macrium uses a second disk or at least another partition.
No other fixed disk or partition available other than Windows? Simply resize and create a 5GB partition for Macrium boot BCD menu, if you do not have one spare. Give it a drive letter (eg. M:\) and you're done.

-> Open "Other Tasks" menu
-> Click "Advanced Settings"
-> Click "Macrium Reflect PE Files"
-> Select M:\
-> Click Okay and all Macrium boot files are moved automatically.

If you don't have Paragon or similar partition tool, just use 'diskpart'. It might be scary at first, but just double check the list of volumes and partitions and backup! Can always ask CoPilot/Gemini for help.
Example commands - off the top of my head... Open Terminal Admin.
Step 1. Make some space:

cmd

diskpart

list volume

select volume 0 (choose volume to shrink, normally 0 will be Windows, so look at 3+)

shrink desired=250000 (specify MB)

Step 2. Create partition:

list disk

select disk 0 (or 1 if 2nd drive)

list partition

create partition primary

format fs=ntfs quick

assign letter=M

exit

PLEASE UPDATE MACRIUM TO OVERCOME RESTORE BUG IN REFLECT 8.1.8595
FYI. You must also rebuild WinPE bootable media. I would also recreate all scripts, etc...

Of course we'll find out soon enough ... I'm a little surprised that there is even an update to V8.1. Macrium has shown some grace here.
