Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

Kb2267602 (defender update)
Kb5006363 (net framework 3.5 and 4.8)

Both installed smoothly on eee pc:)
Haven’t tried to install the optional kb5006746 yet. Don’t those cumulative updates usually become standard updates later?

I think KB5006363 is optional. KB5006746 has been listed by Microsoft as a Quality Update.

I avoid optional updates. I installed one such update in my main PC (Windows 10 64-bit) and lost access to any audio or video device! I also by coincidence lost access to Windows Store. After trying several fixes, nothing worked, I had to backup all my files and reinstall Windows! I wouldn't like to live that nightmare again, no thanks. I prefer standard updates. Even then if something goes wrong I will uninstall it immediately and then block it (hide it) with Windows Update Show/Hide Tool. For example once I upgraded to the last version 22000.258 the generic Intel graphics driver was installed and I lost access to Intel Graphics Properties. So I reinstalled the custom Intel driver (see my older posts, see my specs) and then blocked that update with Show/Hide Tool. Yes, it works in all Windows 10 versions (no matter what Microsoft site claims) and it also works on 11.

PS: Also avoid any optional update referring to drivers. Unnecessarily updating the chipset drivers may cause BSOD. If it works, don't fix it! If I would ever update them, I would prefer the official chipset drivers from Intel or AMD. The same goes for the graphics drivers. If you want to enable all features and have access to Intel/nVidia/AMD control panel, avoid generic drivers from Windows Update.

You should use Macrium Reflect or Acronis to make images of your Drive having the OS (Usually the C: Drive) to avoid such horrors. Macrium has an excellent free version 7.3.6284

Maybe it just needs time. Try again in a day or so maybe. Perhaps it’s something as simple as lots of people updating at the same time or something.

I was once with a similar predicament in Windows 10. I reinstalled a one month old image to get rid of the a few earlier updates and tried again. That succeeded.

The installation of the update takes place after it has already been downloaded on the device and therefore I think that it has has nothing to do with the Internet.

I would just ignore the problematic update and even block it if it keeps trying to install. A newer update will probably make that unnecessary.

Make sure that no driver is replaced by Windows Update or you may lose some functionality. For example I blocked the update for my Intel 4 Family (GMA 4500) graphics card because I lose access to Intel Graphics Properties.

Right know I'm installing latest updates. No message about system's compatibility, so don't worry about that. You only need to hack Setup when installing an upgrade to a newer build, not for every single update. Thank Goodness!

PS: I found how to disable the annoying "Show more options" when I right-click on the Desktop, so I have the expanded list by default, but I didn't find how to start Task Manager by right-clicking on the taskbar, as in Windows 10. How can I add this? I don't mean to pin Task Manager, I mean to make it available when I right-click on the taskbar.

You can still access Task Manager from the task bar, but you need to right-click on the start button to bring up the menu.

Yes, I know. Not very difficult to do, but if you are accustomed to right-click on the taskbar since Windows XP, it is not convenient to change how you do it.

Compatibility report: I just updated to 22000.282, all updates installed without a single issue and without any complain about system compatibility, Also Open Shell did add the cut-copy-paste buttons in Windows Explorer, but doesn't affect the start menu. 8gadgetpack has a new version specifically for Windows 11, so if you want the good old Windows Vista/7 gadgets, try it. Winaero old calculator also works in 11, I prefer the good looking calculator of Windows 7/8 over the new ugly calculator app of Windows 10/11. Winaero classic games also works in 11, good if you want to play good old Solitaire or Mahjong Titans. Winaero WEI also works in 11, just in case you wonder what performance score your system can do. Customizer God doesn't work in 11, so you cannot customize your system icons, if you find any alternative applications that actually work in 11, please share.

Decided to install the cumulative update on the Eee PC. Not sure if it was really necessary but doesn’t seem to be causing people issues. Installing now.

Fingers crossed... Please report so we can also install it.

Just checked, nothing on my Optional Updates list. It looks like I have already installed it. I did not see any issues so far. Go ahead and do it.

Found things slowed up a bit so uninstalled it again. Now back to normal. I’ll wait till it comes as a usual update - sometimes tweaked by then.

Noticeable on an older machine. Which is really nippy - start menu open instantly. After the update start menu was very slow to open and icons didn’t appear on taskbar for ages. But all fine again now I’ve uninstalled it.
