Solved Macrium Reflect Question

When doing a backup on both my machines today I noticed on Write Method, one said Direct Write the other Using system cache, is that correct to have 2 different write methods? and which one is best?

Click on Backup in the top menu.
There you can select those settings by choosing EDIT. It gives you three options, Direct Write, Use system cache, or auto where it will check the fastest method and use that method.

What is funny is if you select one option and it says it can be faster than other option, and if you select other option it says the same.

I cannot see any point other than leaving it in auto!

I would guess that if you are putting the backup on a hard drive rather than an SSD, then the system cache method would be faster, but has the proviso that any power glitch would cause a corrupt backup. Maybe direct write is less likely to suffer from such power outages but would be slower. On the other hand, copying to an SSD is probably just as fast either way.

Yet the winpe recovery media is faster than both at creating or restoring system images.

That's one of those settings I just let Macrium decide.
It's easy with a complex program to overthink things.

Thanks @Ghot That is what I do. I seemed strange to me that they pick different methods It all works well enough so I leave well alone, I was just curious

Not in my experienced - I do not get any real difference. I guess it depends on pc specs.

Hi,
Spec's may effect it more in the os than using winpe seeing nothing else is running only reflect using recovery media.

I prefer winpe none the less I've never seen any errors making or restoring images using winpe and have just verifying an image in the os.
Last place you want to run into errors is restoring a system image or after waiting for one to be created and just simply verifying it lol

I always mount image in viboot. Best way to test them. Never needed to make images offline.

I forgot, where do I set MR8 for Direct Write? I have sporadic glitches that kinda sorta make backups interesting.

I must not be reading my MR options very thoroughly, I cannot remember seeing an option: Direct Write.

My students and I will be working on learning to back up our systems with Macrium. They're all senior citizens, so will use the free version 8. When writing the tutorial, I didn't see this particular page; is it available in the free version, and if so, how do I get to it?

Never mind . . . I didn't read the post correctly, but I found it. Here's a screenie and it looks like Direct Write I/O is faster for me.
