Until that happens there's no point in changing if what you have works. What will probably kill it is if Windows starts introducing all sorts of changes to the boot system / disk encryption / secure boot etc.

For Imaging : keep Windows OS small and have user data e.g music / multi-media /email / "Officy type files" stored elsewhere and find another program for backing up / archiving DATA.

(That's why although it takes longer things like Linux DD which simply copies physically byte by byte sector for sector whatever is written on the disk (including blank areas) will work indefinitely since it's not dependent on any particular file system or encryption method. What you do though with the restored disk is another matter of course).

When there was an Insider version that broke Reflext, it was due to a vss bug but it was fixed (Reflect issued a workaround - we cannot say if MS ever fixed the bug though).

However, you could still use Reflect in winpe/re mode even then.

As you say, I think it would require a really major change to significantly break Reflect e.g. totally different storage from NTFS. Even then, it would probably work in forensic mode.

Such a change would probably break lots of other apps anyway.

If I was a betting man, I would put odds of windows breaking v8 at less than 10%.

What I would REALLY like is for the MR providers to allow you to download, for free, a TRIAL version of MR X -- say, putting a 30-day limit on the license. That way, I could try it out and see if I really do get the performance increase they are claiming. But I do not see that happening and I won't spend the annual license fee just to try it out.

What make you think there won't be a 30-day trial? There still is for v8.1, even though v8.1 now has a subscription model. Why shouldn't there be for Reflect X? The required steps are already built into the code, at the end of a subscription Reflect X will revert to a restore-only version. That's exactly what v8.1 Trial does now at the end of the 30 day trial.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

So will I, on just one of my machines, but I've gone for a purchase. I've already got a 4-pack of v8, but I've just bought one more v8 perpetual licence. On release of Reflect X I can trade that in at no cost for a 3-year Reflect X annual plan.

I have an old Reflect Home v7 license not currently in use which I could update to v8 for £29. I'm wondering if I can then trade in that updated v8 licence for Reflect Home X from 8 October and receive a 3-year Annual Plan for the new Reflect X at no extra cost?

I would have thought so, an upgrade to a one-time v8 licence should count as a new purchase within the terms of the trade-in offer (just don't hold me to that ;))

There's also a chance you may get a good upgrade offer from that old v7 licence (or me for my old v8 4-pack) direct to Reflect X. If so, any such offers will not be announced until after Reflect X is launched.

I upgraded a spare Reflect 7 licence yesterday 7/10 to Reflect 8 for £29 hoping to trade it for free to a 3 year Reflect X plan. No news yet about X as of 0800 on 8/10. If the free upgrade to X is not offered then I'll get my money back under the 30 day guarantee. Macrium refused to tell me whether upgrading from v7 to v8 would be eligible for the free X trade-in which is poor.
