In actual fact, If I got a family subscription, I have enough computers to backup files to, and utilise the 1TB per user. That’s 6TB.
Or create 5 user accounts on my PC?

Some of us would very much appreciate v10's 2x faster backup - my Hyper-V host machine with all its VMs for one :wink:

There's over 350GB to back up, and verifying take almost as long as imaging!
And this is on a machine with a 10th gen i7 and an NVMe SSD.

OneDrive simply mirrors everything that is in your OneDrive folder. That's it. If you want to save a MR file to the OneDrive folder, it will be mirrored in OneDrive cloud. You're, of course, limited to your Internet speed. Mine is fairly brisk at 960 Mbps. But even at that, when I got this new computer last month and logged in to my Microsoft Account, it took several hours to download my complete OneDrive in order to have a mirror copy locally.

Once you have a Microsoft 365 subscription and a OneDrive family plan, you can do anything with it you want. I've read about some users juggling the accounts to have many terabytes of personal storage. I have the family plan for Kate and me. That makes the yearly cost just $50 USD for each of us. I cull ruthlessly with my amateur photography and with many decades of data and photos I'm currently using less than 20% of my 1TB of cloud OneDrive.

To make OneDrive much more user friendly, I use a program called StableBit CloudDrive. It creates a virtual hard drive that looks just like any other drive on your local system but is in reality your cloud storage. Now any program at all including any backup program etc. can access your cloud storage just as though it were another drive on your local system.

But I do much the same - multiple backups to multiple systems including off site storage. I'm not quite at the point of real time data protection, but always within a few hours of the very latest data being backed up. Maybe I do need to consider a real-time solution if I can figure out the best way of implementing that.

Some on the forum have multiple terabytes of data to contend with. I don't. As mentioned, all of my data and photos kept in my OneDrive folder are less than 20% of my 1TB of cloud OneDrive. So for my use, OneDrive with "Files On Demand" turned OFF in order to keep a real-time local mirror, works quite nicely.

@hsehestedt, is it my understanding that what StableBit CloudDrive does is turn OneDrive from it's native function of mirroring everything in your OneDrive folder to making OneDrive simply cloud storage and eliminating what OneDrive is actually designed to do?

I have used this method before but found it is only partly successful due to the inefficiency of defrag.

I just reduced a 58GB vhdx to only 53 GB when the used space is only around 35 GB.

I have done similar using minitool partition wizard, shrinking c drive partition to minimum, reducing vhdx size, running compact expanding vhdx size then maximising Size of c partition.

It needed the step of reducing vhdx file to free up the space.

Without that step, I found not all nominally deleted space was recovered.

In the end, I found it was jusy easier to clone vhdx file.

Well, on Windows 10/11, you used to be able to mount the online onedrive directory as a network drive and theoretically you could backup to that. However, changes in security prevents this now.

An easier method is to symlink a directory outside the onedrive directory tree (on a different drive/partition to C drive) to a directory in the onedrive (there is a tenforums tutorial how to do this).

Then you backup to the diectory outside the onedrive tree, and it gets automatically synced to online onedrive.

An alternative solution is to move the onedrive directory tree to another drive/partition, then you can image directly to a onedrive synced folder.

Syncing the reflect image will go as fast as your upload.

Trying to backup directly to the online will always be much slower because of vast amount of files being processed (similar to how file explorer takes much longer to copy lots of small files rather than one large file).

@antspants, you list in your specs that your Internet upload speed is 40 Mbps. I can't see why you would even consider uploading image backups to OneDrive.

I can upload animated instructional videos for clients company training programs, sometimes 6GB. Not that painful, FTP is always much faster than the upload connection, I have no idea why. But yes, 100+GB would be God-Awful

I am still waiting for the 1Gigabit upload connection that they promised last year.

Sure, Brink. But I always go for tutorials for 11 on the Eleven forum. The slightest thing changes and it doesn’t work. As I have recently been finding out with some of Brinks tutorials that I have failed to keep up with.

No real need to look at older one - I was just saying really that thr method has been around for several years.

You are indeed absolutely correct to always use a W11 version of tutorial as that may have tweaks needed as a consequence of W11 "quirks".

Although I have never seen it stated, I presume @Brink will be updating all key tenforums tutorials (especially ones where menu inputs differ) over time.
