Well, Parmount claim many said they would prefer a lease. It is sad that they would tell such a blatant lie. Even on the Macrium Forum poll, only 7.69 voted in favour of a lease.
I have 5 8.1 Home leases. At best I will trade one for a half price lease but no chance on the other four.
I think Paramount are no longer interested about domestic consumers!

The bloody bean counters have ruined Macrium. It's like all the best Scottish whiskies all being sold off with no age statement, meaning they are only three years old. Cash flow is improved but there will be fewer and fewer good ten-year, twelve-year and older whiskies in the future.

Someone here mentioned having 5 licenses and that they will upgrade one of them.
I had a 4-license "pack", which is not the same as 4 licenses, and MR told me it was all-or-none to do the upgrade. When I saw the upgrade cost for the pack, I decided I only wanted to pay for one upgrade, not four.
So, if they are now going to ONLY subscription, and my current license will not upgrade to "X" for free, then I will be keeping the 8.1 license and looking into alternatives.
I've already experimented with Hasleo and determine that it is nearly as fast as MR 8.1 Home and generates backup that are nearly the same size. I don't use any of the advanced MR options like Image Guardian, nor do I do incrementals. So, Hasleo has all the features I need, including making rescue media boot option and rescue USB stick.
So, if I switch away from MR, it will probably be toward Hasleo.
UPDATE: I read the update info on the MR site -- claiming that MR X is twice as fast as MR 8.1. If 8.1` took a LONG time, then it might be worth the upgrade cost to cut that time in half, but I use a NVMe Gen 4 stick and backup time is only 1.5 minutes. Spending all that money to cut that to 45 seconds -- is not worth it, in my view.
I had a 4-license "pack", which is not the same as 4 licenses, and MR told me it was all-or-none to do the upgrade. When I saw the upgrade cost for the pack, I decided I only wanted to pay for one upgrade, not four.
So, if they are now going to ONLY subscription, and my current license will not upgrade to "X" for free, then I will be keeping the 8.1 license and looking into alternatives.
I've already experimented with Hasleo and determine that it is nearly as fast as MR 8.1 Home and generates backup that are nearly the same size. I don't use any of the advanced MR options like Image Guardian, nor do I do incrementals. So, Hasleo has all the features I need, including making rescue media boot option and rescue USB stick.
So, if I switch away from MR, it will probably be toward Hasleo.

Agreed. My system backs up in about 2 minutes. I can wait 2 minutes. I also will be sticking with 8.1.

The only small positive I see is that if you have purchased a one time Macrium 8.1 License recently you can trade in your one time license for a free 3 year subscription with support, so since Macrium 8 has been released for about 3 years it is about the same amount of time but I would still prefer the one time option.

Should get Macrium Reflect Home 8.1 Reinstalled, then later on make a Decision if i want an Annual plan to Reflect X, Should've waited to purchase Reflect 8 til closer to Reflect X release.
