Exactly. I like to back up my system every morning and only keep one or two days of backups. Anything older than that is out of date.

This obviously varies from person to person but for sure anything older than 3 months will be of no virtually use to majority of persons.

Quite true. I do have one or two emergency backups from a month or so ago. But I doubt I'd ever use them. I have them just in case, though.

I didn't know that -- as I thought it was an "update and support" subscription and the app would continue to work, just not be supported anymore -- like v8.0 Free.

It's been that way since v8.1, whether that's the 30-day Trial or a Subscription. At the end of the trial/subscription it reverts to a Restore Only version.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
I pulled down the trial version and I must say that my initial impression is not good:

1) When I installed the trial it gave no warning that it would completely replace Reflect 8.1. Normally that would not be a problem, except that it never asked me to first deactivate version 8.1. As a result, that license key is now locked unless I go begging them to reset it.

2) Very first thing I wanted to test was the new ability to exclude files from a backup. It turns out that this gets set in "defaults" so there appears to be no way to set it per backup definition. It can only be set globally.

I gave up after that for today. I guess that I will revisit it at another date.

I can confirm that running the X trial has not invalidated any of my four-pack v8 licenses.

I uninstalled X, installed 8 and removed the license but it did not seem to become available in My Account on the MR website. In the end, I restored from an old backup, removed the license, uninstalled MR and then restored from yesterday's backup. That license is now available if I ever go back to v8 on this computer.

If that was a one-time purchase licence for which the support has expired, then yes it will continue working forever.
If that was a subscription licence then it would become 'Restore only' if the subscription is not renewed.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

I have the same version and on Monday, it was updated to build 8311; so, you might be able to get that update. I was surprised by it because MR X came out just after that.

Is this "restore only" also true of the "Rescue Disk" -- the USB stick made from MR?

I think we will have to wait and see. I can imagine The rescue disk will try and check online if your license is still valid. If you want to test it, make sure the computer can't access the internet by temporarily switching your router off.

Good Question. I'll need to send my PC through a time machine to test that (well, change its BIOS date, at least :wink:)

Looks like I can still use my Reflect X usb to make images a year after my subscription ended.

Just an interesting aside - I thought I'd download and try the free version of Easeus Backup - Easeus' website has been down all day.

FYI , Those not wanting to go the free route, you can purchase a lifetime license of Terabyte Image For Windows which is just as good and reliable as Macrium for what Macrium is charging for a 1 year subscription. I just upgraded my five year old Terabyte Lifetime from v3.xx to 4.02 that was recently released for $25 , a fraction of what Macrium wanted from me and I will not have to upgrade it again for another five years or so.
