Yep...but widgets goes back to earlier versions of Windows as well. I have mine completely turned off. If you just turn them off from the task bar in Settings, the process still runs. I used the same registry entry to disable it in Windows 10 in 11 and have it completely turned off.

True, but for older eyes, it's not always visible.

We fought this fight with earlier versions of Windows, but it seems Microsoft has gone back to its old habits again, ignoring those with handicaps.

I have two with touch screens - neither of which are new enough for Windows 11.

But as for narrow scroll bars, I'm hard pressed to remember the last time I actually tried to use a scroll bar. Every laptop has a touch pad, and two-finger scrolling means I'll never need to go near a scroll bar.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Yup, my "Little Lenovo" lappy has a touch screen . . . which I hardly ever used, I'm so acclimated to the mouse. Besides, I don' wanna hurt her feelings, ya know . . . And nope, LL cannot do Windows 11.

This desktop, doesn't have a touch screen, nor does it have a touch pad. :-(

And my 'druthers are to work on my desktop, leaving the laptops for when I can't reach the desktop.

One of mine is a Lenovo, a little Yoga 11e. I do use the touchscreen a fair bit, it's particularly useful for scrolling through long posts. And of course playing Solitaire is much more fun when you can pick up and move the cards ;)

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Looks like it has to be set at design-time.

This is a comparison of a scrollbar within SMACC (which was developed way before Win 11 but inherits the component) and the Settings app.

Would be nice if it was made customisable at runtime.

You think that's bad, I have a little 13.5" Surface laptop with a touchscreen but I'm to OCD to use it and smear up the screen all the time lol. Rather use the touchpad, keyboard or external mouse.

Exactly. I don't see why making the scrollbars narrow makes it any easier for a touchscreen.
Is it really the reason they made them so narrow? :unsure:

The problem is this is only a partial fix. Many menus do not respond to the winareo tweak.

In fact, scrollbars are a complete mess in Windows 11 with at least 3 different types excluding 3rd party apps.

You're right, at least the major ones, and now my Firefox, Brave, Opera and Edge have thicker than usual bars, but that's okay, as long as I don't end with glasses!

And those of us with touchpads mostly use two-finger scrolling. I hardly ever need to grab a scrollbar either.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

At one time there was never an indication anything was lower on a page

Unless you disable hide scroll bars often they did not ever appear with mouse movement unless you happened to pass over where they should normally be then they appeared briefly.

Exactly! It took me forever and three days to finally get over messing up the screen on my phone. When I have a stylus handy, I use it!
