Windows 11
Hi, my pc recently crashed while i was playing a game and since it hasnt been able to get into windows 11. When i startup the pc it shows the screen where i can open bios and then it loads a little and goes into another screen where it says "Preparing automatic repair" and then it restarts by itself. Sometimes when it has restarted a couple of times i can get into the blue troubleshooting menu. But nothing in there seems to work at all. I then got told to update bios and reinstall windows, and i got the bios updated to the latest version. However when selecting the ssd i have installed the windows media creation tool on in the boot menu, it just restarts and goes back to the "preparing automatic repair" loop. All help i greatly appreciated.

Hi Carl, welcome to the Eleven Forum 🙏

If you’re happy to reinstall Windows, read the following carefully;

“THIS IS ONE WAY” Others may have other ways.
This is from my Notes list, it’s been a while since I have used it.
You may choose to wait to hear from someone else before proceeding?

Firstly, if you can not boot to Windows, the Media Creation Tool ISO download should be on a USB, not on your SSD. You needed to have created the USB after installing Media Creation Tool and downloading Windows 11.

Secondly, if you did create the USB install media, you need to find out how to boot to the USB made by Media Creation Tool using your Motherboard/Bios. It will be online or in your documentation. There is usually a “Boot Menu” entry in the Asus Bios basic settings menu (not the advanced), open it, select the UEFI USB option for your USB and it should automatically just boot straight away to the USB.

You can only continue here if you created the Windows 11 Install Media onto a USB. If you didn’t, you will have to wait for someone else smarter than me to help you.

—->

After booting from the USB, you see the Install Windows 11 screen, press Shift + F10 to open command prompt.

Windows 11 install screen

IMG_4125.png

BEFORE CONTINUING; Be sure you are selecting the correct disk, if you have more than one disk drive, disconnect the others. Everything, including all files, programs and partitions will be wiped from the disk you select if you follow on from here.

(After pressing Shift + F10 to open command prompt)
At the command prompt, type Diskpart, press Enter.
Type List Disk, press Enter.
Type Select Disk # (where # is the number your drive shows up as), press Enter.
Type Clean, press Enter.
Type Exit, press Enter.
Close the Command Prompt window.

Click the "Next" button.
Click the "Install now" button.
Put in your product key if you are using one and click the "Next" button.
Accept the terms and click the "Next" button.
Choose "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)."
(The following is redundant in my opinion, I just click next, Windows knows where and how to install on your disk)
Click "New" and then click the "Apply" button. Two partitions should appear. Click the bottom partition.

Click the "OK" button and then click the "Next" button.
From then on follow the on screen instructions till you get to the desktop.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

Before attempting a reinstall, try booting to Safe Mode. After successfully booting to Safe Mode you may find you can now restart and boot normally.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Hi there antspants. So I have created the Windows Media Creation Tool on an external SSD, does it matter that it isn't a USB-Stick? When I go into BIOS and select the UEFI OS it loads a little and then restarts and so it continues.

Thanks for the response thoe its greatly appreciated :)

Hi Bree. When I tried booting in to safe mode it just went back into the restarting loop. And now it seems like it cant even get to the troubleshooting menu.

Thanks for the suggestion, might be something hardware related...

Hi Carl.

Yes, it must be on a “USB Stick”
You need to look up how to boot from the USB Stick in your BIOS. Look online. My ASUS board is very old so yours will be different.

Here is your BIOS Manual below.
Go to section 1.2.1 in the manual.
Look at the boot priority in EZ Mode
Drag your USB to the top of the boot priority and reboot, it “should” boot to the USB which is what you need to do to install Windows.
Make sure your SSD is 2nd in the boot priority.

BIOS Manual Link:
PRIME TUF GAMING B550/A520 Series BIOS Manual ( English Edition )

NOTE: You may see two instances of your USB stick in the Boot Priority, make sure you drag the UEFI USB to the top if that is an option.

Once you boot from the USB Stick, you should be able to follow the instructions in post #2

@Bree may be able to help you further with Booting To Safe Mode as an alternative to reinstalling, I don’t know.
