It installed for me on 4/10/24 as regular windows update. It is a built-in component of Windows whether you have an app that uses it or not.
More than likely a component of windows uses it. I doubt anyone here can tell you the exact WHY MS felt we needed it.
I've learned I stay saner when I don't fret about something MS does. I fret only when something is broken.

You sure you got 6.0.29 .NET Runtime, Host, and Desktop Runtime this month? What I got with the regular patches was Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 23H2 for x64 (KB5036620). I don't see 6.0.29 Runtime, Host, or Desktop Runtime anywhere on my machines.

I wonder if MS sent it by mistake, or if it's part of something else that's coming which needs these components.
I've only ever had the cumulative updates for .Net framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 during regular Windows updates - this thing is completely new to me

Just FYI, the current runtime version of .NET is 8.something. If you aren't developing code, you won't see anything until you load some software that uses .NET 8. You are getting the updates for .NET 6 because something in your PC is requiring version 6 and you most likely have the .NET 6 runtime installed.

I routinely get updates for .NET 6, 7 and 8 because I have the runtime packages in order to code software for those platforms. If I wasn't coding I would probably be like everyone else and get updates for versions 3.5 and 4.8.1. I get those too, BTW.

Oh, and really, you don't need to worry about it. This is perfectly normal Windows behaviour.

I routinely get updates for .NET 6, 7 and 8 because I have the runtime packages in order to code software for those platforms. If I wasn't coding I would probably be like everyone else and get updates for versions 3.5 and 4.8.1. I get those too, BTW.

Oh, and really, you don't need to worry about it. This is perfectly normal Windows behaviour.

I'm not worried, just wondering why it would install! I'm not a dev, never done any coding, I wasn't aware .Net 6 had ever been installed until today

Right, yeah, it's sort of the latest-and-greatest set of libraries for developing Windows apps. It's not specific to UWP; it works with Win32 C++ apps, WinForms, WPF, etc.
