@f23948 At the moment.
It is a lot of scare mongering. do people know what is does and how it affects them? FYI the function in Norton is turned off and can only be turned on by the user. Rather than people worrying about AV they should think more about all the other things they use especially free stuff

For me it's a question of why. Crypto Mining has nothing to do with security and shouldn't be included in a security program. As of today, it might be an option that one has to select to install or turn on. How hard would it be for Norton to make it a default setting? They would just have to make it a default with the option to click on no. Most people will just keep clicking on yes and not take the time to read what they are clicking on.

If Norton or any company wants to supply mining software they should have it as a separate app and not include it in their AV package.

From what I understand is that the user is only going to make a few dollars at the most. Norton is the only one that is going to make the big bucks and at the user's expense. A win win for Norton.

I doubt there would be many if any that would make anything by mining this way. The costs will likely outweigh the profits.

From what I saw in the one video is that the users are stressing their systems to the max. It's just a matter of time and they are going to have to replace components or even the whole system. On top of that their electric bills are increasing.

I was doing so research into mining and that's what I discovered. It's not worth the time or effort of individuals to mine. It's not profitable. Toss in the wear and tear on your gear it makes very little sense to do it on a small scale. But with all of the spam and people claiming to be rich by mining on Twitter people will eat things like that up.

It is an absolutely pointless exercise mining, even though you get 85% and Norton 15% but what is 85% of Nothing !!
I think this is one of the worst things Norton has done. However as far as I know they cannot legally turn it on, it has to be done by the user.
I still think we need to look at what else is going on behind our backs from other apps and programs and routers.

This Video is more informative not to mention it seems to still run when the PC is active!

Another case of corporate greed from a company that is getting too large. Clearly they expect to reap in the cash from all those that are daft enough to enable Crypto Mining.
Given at least in the UK we are about to get a massive hike in energy bills and people should ideally be looking at ways to use less anyway to help with Carbon emissions global warming and such, encouraging people to use more by mining is at best irresponsible.
Never been a fan of Norton since Symantec got involved, this is just another reason to avoid it IMO. Buying or merging with the competition as well as various utility programs, looks to me like an attempt to monopolise the market, needs some sort of regulation to stop this corporate greed.

If they make it the default setting to be turned on in the install process it would be legal as long as they gave the user, the option to opt out. Most user will just keep clicking on next without taking time to read anything first.
