@Lance1 had the file: ehuse_x4.exe
Did you have it the same, with the underscore instead of the dash?

You might also want to search ThisPC for... ehuse_x4.exe or ehuse-x4.exe

I am having the same problem except the ehuse-x4.exe file resided on my Synology NAS mapped drive. Even using the Pagefile.sys trick mentioned, I still can't stop the link from being created after deleting it. I was able to find the ehuse-x4.exe file in the root of this NAS mapped drive and was able to remove it.

This problem started occuring about the same time as Lance1's experience - coincidence? Unlike a small USB drive, the NAS drive cannot be simply erased as it has TBs of data on it.

This 'virus' deleted many of my files on the NAS (fortunately I had a recycle folder so I still have the files). It also created a subdirectory with the same name as the root of this NAS drive, moved many files to the new subdirectory and made those files read-only. Trying to move the files back to the root directory from the subdirectory causes those files to move back to the subdirectory or deletes them. Restoring files from the recycle folder results in the files being deleted again.

Open to further suggestions how to resolve this!

My post #59 was with out success. I had to reinstall windows clean to make this issue go away. My ehuse_x4.exe resided in the system32 folder but it was unseen. Invisible. Not that this invasive app software whatever you want to call it attacks only external drives. I stupidly attached my 6tb with my recovery images on it and lost them. Interesting to note that the files where still there if you looked at This PC you could see that they are still there but going into the drive it looks empty. Have you right clicked on the shortcut and properties to see the path to see the location? I bet it is System32. If it is you may be as I did be looking a clean install of windows.

It's probably ehuse_x4.exe. Just I typo.

What do you think Ghot. Is on the NAS or System32? The NAS is recognized as remote so I think System32. Clean install. That's the only thing that fixed me.

I think you and @FreeBooter were right. There was a 'something' in the System32 folder.
It seems to be acting like an infection... by hiding itself.

This is why 3rd party backup software is so important.
Restoring from a backup would probably have fixed it as well?

Or restore from a full backup. I don't think System Restore would have fixed that.

I agree BUT! Restoring from a backup would be from a Remote Drive! Instantly infecting it. That said It would depend on the OP's recovery solution.

I store backups on internal drives.
When I do a restore I always do it from Macrium's bootable media.

On the last step before the Restore starts... I always 'check the box' (#4)...

On a side note... I use Bitdefender Total Security, AV and firewall.
And I have the firewall set to 'block all'.

The only things I allow are Firefox and svchost

So I'm not exactly your average customer.

As I said I lost my recovery options so what I did is crate a Windows 11 boot USB on a separate PC and boot on that at startup and affectively Banishing the Evil Spirit.
