Solved Odd Shortcut Appearing On My Thumb Drives.


I wonder how many people are having this issue? It started in December 2025 so very resent. Ya.. Has anyone looked at the link on post #78?

i have had a good read of it and it seems to be a nasty bit of work.
but i have my swap/page file cleared on every restart/reboot
which may help as this exe file couldn't seem to found anywhere.

its not the first time i have come across something getting into the system via the swap/page file.

Caution: I haven't read this thread from the beginning.. So if what I write below is out of context just ignore :-).

To whomsoever it may concern:

While in Seven Forum or Ten Forum I had helped one with the shortcut virus problem. I do not remember what exactly I proposed but vaguely remember I had used WinRAR. I had also mentioned vaccination of the flash drives.

So a fresh start here.

Shortcut virus can be killed with Shortcut Virus Removal Tool which you can download from SOURCEFORGE Shortcut Virus Removal Tool (Last updated on 20 Dec 2025. So it is current)

"Shortcut Virus Removal Tool is a powerful, portable, easy to use and safe program for fixing USB drives, external HDD / SSD drives and computers infected with shortcut virus. With only one click, you can remove shortcut virus from your computer and USB disk drive.

It can restore files hidden by a virus and remove suspicious shortcuts and files from your USB drive and computer. It can repair registry and undo unwanted changes made by malware.

It can also delete autorun virus from your USB drive.

Respectably, this procedure is not something I've heard of before.

Mine has always been set like this:

Ok, in other words, the file remains but only the contents are cleared out.

Whereas the wrong way would be do eliminate having a page file, altogether. Correct?

And do you have a maximum page file size set it can go to before it ever gets cleared out?

my swap/page file is set to 5555 minimum and 5555 maximum
on C: drive only. then the reg entry to clear it every restart/reboot.

just to note.
i set the reg file to clear the swap/page file
then i disable the swap/page file and restart.

then trim the drive. then set the swap/page file
5555/5555 and then restart the system again.

See post #95 As I said I hade to reinstall windows clean to get rid of whatever was living in the system32 folder. As of now I am clean.

OK, you wiped your old External HDD clean, writing zeroes and reinstalled Windows. So you have a clean Registry that should have nullified the malware added registry entries. (Shortcut Virus auto runs from the registry entry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run. Deleting suspicious keys like odwcamszas, WXXKYz, ZGFYszaas, OUzzckky in it is one way of killing the shortcut virus.)

I read that "Based on recent reports, the ehuse_x4.exe file is associated with malware that functions as a shortcut virus" . So eliminating all instances of ehuse_x4.exe and deleting the suspicious keys in the registry should be a sure-shot way of killing the shortcut virus it creates..

Can you directly connect your NAS to your PC and access it as an external HDD? I do not know anything NAS, but have read this:
  • Check Compatibility: Ensure that your NAS supports direct connections. Most modern models do, often through an Ethernet port.
  • Assemble the Required Equipment: An Ethernet cable and maybe a NAS power adapter are required.
  • Attach the cable: Connect the Ethernet cable's two ends to the NAS and the Ethernet port on your PC, respectively.
  • Give a fixed IP address: To connect to the NAS, open the network settings on your PC and manually assign a static IP address.
  • Access the NAS Interface: To access the NAS interface, use the software or browser that the NAS manufacturer has supplied.
If you can accomplish it and access your HDD in NAS, well and good. Switch ofF the router and remove any physical connection to the PC, Likewise remove any other USB connected docks, USB Hubs, external storage devices, Printer etc,,except USB Keyboard and mouse.

Access your NAS,. Take a screenshot of Windows Disk Management and close WDM. If only shortcuts appear, take a screenshot. Post both the screenshots..

Install WinRAR free 7.13 from WinRAR - Access hidden folders on your computer - Winrarfree.net. Run WinRAR and navigate to your NAS disk. Can you see all files and folders"?

I would recommend that you retrieve the data and save it elsewhere before proceeding with any other method of removing the virus enunciated in that article.

Sorry I haven't replied to numerous posts, was ill but better now.

I fortunately was able to rid my system of the virus by falling back to a restore point before things went south on the machine I was using to access my NAS. I only found a single instance of the offending ehuse_x4.exe on my NAS and removed it. Now the painful part. This virus placed literally 5 million files on my NAS - some duplicates of existing files and many small files. This is spread throughout the NAS. It will take me a long time to get it back to where it was, but I'm on it!
