In Word, you can browse to folder for a save destination. In Excel, you need to paste or type the path, which seems inconsistent, but hey… we’re used to it?

There is a catch. If you’re saving to your computer by default, you lose the autosave function, which seems a little nasty. But again… we’re getting used to it? If you try to toggle the top autosave option, it tells you that you need to save to OneDrive.

(What you say works! Though you wouldn't know if you go by the interface you're provided with!!! i.e., from the Save/SaveAs interface you actually have no idea where the document is being saved.

On the same settings page, you choose your destination. As for save as, one should always look at the path when saving?

Another annoying Microsoft 'feature'...
I was corrected earlier when I suggested this icon

might represent a way to show all the windows that are active so that one could be selected and it would appear in front (or could be [right mouse] selected and it would appear Stage Left or Stage Right......I was corrected by a member I respect told me this icon was really a way to access "alternative desktops" one could employ (another 'feature' I can't figure out)--and he could be right, except, there's still the question:

How, if the window you're trying to bring to the forefront isn't available, do you get it to come to the forefront? There used to be a way you could line up all windows (in a staircase sort of pattern) so you could get to the desired window. Now, it seems, neither this icon

, nor the Stage Left/Stage Right technique, nor the staircase presentation, work any more?

What ever happened to Quality Assurance?

One used to be able to, and should, continue to be able to ASSUME, the Save As location should be (by default) the same place the Save happened! (and shouldn't have to double check what used to be a sensible --> default location)

Alt + Tab keys, old school.
And you should be able to open Task View by pressing Windows key + Tab.
Also, Right-click anywhere on the taskbar, then select Show Task View, should also work.

Task view works...the same as

works. But if you think you're going to be able to pull up the window you want?--good luck.
Yeah, back to the Alt/Tab of yesteryear, bringing up every window, one-by-one. (Cutting edge interface!)

I had a look at this earlier today

It does exactly what it is supposed to, in the center of screen it will show you your open windows, at the bottom it shows your available desktops. You click the window you want to come forward or click on the "X" to close a window.

Oh, guess what. Now it's working.
It should bring up the window you click on. Additionally, if you right click on a window it should allow you to choose (Snap Left/ Snap Right) whether that window takes up the left side of the screen or the right side.
Which screen the window pops up on is a surprise.
Yesterday, it did none of these things. Probably because I might have had too many windows open and it got confused.

Now how did that saying go? Inconsistency (or was it consistency) is the hobgoblin of success?

p.s. the alternative desktops option...

I agree with them completely in that regard. Ultimately we are not so much forced into such things as you have mentioned (see above) as we are compelled to embrace them. We could all live as Luddites if we so chose, but because this choice of lifestyle is not necessarily convenient or even practical most of us do not make this choice. There are very likely no Luddites reading this thread.

So once again we come to the crux of the matter: Convenience and user preference. Personally, I respect user preference, but I question the level of convenience that the proponents of the "cloud" would defend here. Personally, I'm just not seeing it. What I'm seeing is a great deal of frustration, annoyance, and needless grief among those who try to turn off the "cloud" and it just keeps on returning. Now, I'm only brushing up against what all of this entails because I've seen that it can culminate in quite the nightmare for some individuals.

Some have claimed that One Drive is extremely convenient and would never want to be without it. I say, good for them and I'm happy for them. This should not mean that everyone should be compelled to use it to the extent that it is next to impossible to deactivate. I am of the persuasion that I am my own best first line of defence when it comes to security. I would much rather operate my own, personal cloud on my own, personal hardware. I accept that that is my own personal user preference. I should not have to be brow beaten, humiliated, or cajoled into paying for more storage on the part of another party if I want to provide it for myself. Neither do I feel that my operating system should be so compromised that if I choose not to use One Drive (or anything like it) that I should have to expend myself to any great degree declining it and trying to keep it that way.

Options matter.

The the most interesting part is that i see how normal users view things.. how it can be a real trouble while some see it as the best thing ever made.

and also this privacy thing.. some see it as we screwed so its just to accept it, others say only way to go is Linux to get privacy.. and also the the blind trust of the cloud.
unless the code is opensource you really dont know if the owner or some agency of the server have access to the data. But also "My data is safe it is in the cloud"..
It was not long ago i read in some of the IT news of a cloud provider that got hit by ransomware and all customer data was lost.
Then email and privacy.. darn everybody know(or should know) Google scan all emails.. and then windows fanboys dont think MS don't do that on hotmail/outlook and what other email domains they has nowadays.

So people get Proton email and so on and saying.. My email is private... oh yeah.. sure.... IF you encrypt the email so the receiver need to decrypt it afterwards.. Sending emails is like sending postcards.. it's open to read for everyone that has access to the nod/server it passes on the way from one side to the other side of the world..

It is interesting as to many things is pure myths... and then you have the ones trying to convince everyone, "go linux and everything is gold" or "Go proton" or "Go VPN and you have privacy" It is interesting to see how everyone thinks from The pure user that dont know the difference between windows or internet explorer up to the long timers IT professionals

I learn new things from the simple user that dont know jack about IT is up to the pros that is developing the next generation of stuff.
The simple user like my old mother.. they see things kind of black and white.. a bit like Occam's razor.. and some times even they know jack about the stuff you talking about.. they can say something like.. "But can't you have a switch to turn it off" No it is not possible to have a physical switch.... But that simple comment gave me an idea to program a script that kills the connection.
Comment like that and threads in here and other forums makes me evolve as it gives me a new perspective and new ideas.

as for the pros.. Yeah i do learn from those to now and then, when it comes to new stuff i never touched

So this thread.. Yeah my personal opinion is onedrive is crap.. i have no use for it and i never will.. If i need a cloud service i hook up my own with a docker container on my server and my data is still my data but i have access to it around the world.. Or i just "VPN" in to my server

I say use the right tool for the right job... You dont use a fork to fix a roof leak, you a use hammer and other stuff. :wink:

So onedrive is crap for me MS sucks and all that yada-yada, but it is gold for several other people..
My advice to everyone is just use cloud and other online services the right way and dont really 100% trust them..
and keep in mind.. nothing is free in life or online.. if you dont pay for it, you paying with your data/time/ads/etc.

There was a time I thought this could be an incredibly useful option--desktop#1 set up with the apps, and app locations, and documents, and emails, and Outlook options I needed to address Issue #1; and desktop#2 set up with the apps, and app locations, and documents, and emails, and Outlook options I needed to address Issue #2; etc. (even if each desktop needed to reintroduce the same programs set to different locations, etc. to address each different issue. (the concept never panned out that way--and I wasn't interested in the very simplistic other options)

I know you will be able to figure it out, Ants, you really do this well--and amazingly quickly. But I've never read that anyone was particularly interested in multiple desktops anyway.

But I'm really interested in (removing OneDrive while) structuring a 1TB Personal Vault courtesy of Microsoft.

Terribly nice of you to say, but you may be confusing me with someone else

I’ll be honest, I don’t find that the windows multiple desktop option suites me. This being the case, I have no idea about it as I never bothered with it. This is why I bought Stardock Fences4. It does what I need and more, including multiple desktops. But due to the fact that the icon fences just work so well, I have no need for the multiple desktops.
Having said that, Stardock has done it again and introduced Fences5 and it’s now a subscription. There is a lifetime purchase option but converted to the Aussie $ it doesn’t suite me, so Fences4 will have to do me. Fences4 may still be available, I believe it is via Steam.

The OneDrive option seems like a no-brainer to me, as you stated, saving your files to any folder other than the user folders (if at such a point that removing OneDrive is no longer an option or you just want to use a vault) would seem the answer, you’ll have to leave the other folders empty and make it a habit of “saving as” to specific folders. There may be reg tweaks to make life easier but I don’t know what they are. Programs like MS Word etc are easy as you can tell the program specifically where you want files saved. Unfortunately not all programs have this option.

Some tutorials you may or may not have seen;
(For some reason I thought there was a tutorial for excluding specific folders from OneDrive, I can’t find it?)
